Tara who is a 20 pound mini always returns home from her walks and just goes FLAT! I thought the mile and a half walk was not too far for her but lately I had started to think maybe I was wrong. So today, after the walk she again went flat but I picked up her favorite ball and offered to play soccer. Well, we played about 15 minutes of soccer then I set up a make shift agility course in the house and she ran it for another 15 minutes...up and down...up and down. She still wasn't tired but I WAS and ready for breakfast so I stopped. Hmmmmm.
Now I am wondering if her walks are LONG ENOUGH??? I live in an area with VERY steep hills so her walks are not on an easy flat surface. And her walks are at a fairly fast pace without many stops. I also always assumed since she is 20 pounds that her exercise requirement would be far less then that of an 80 pound doodle. That she would only need about 1/4 as much walking distance to meet her needs. Is this illogical?
Now I am also wondering if she is just laying around totally bored waiting for me to initiate something?
So I am curious about how other doodles behave after their walks. Are they tired? Are they revved up and and ready for more?? What does your doodle do?

I'm with you!!! LOL!
Jared, I don't blame you for avoiding walks in Canadian winter weather! It sounds like your dogs are doing great on your current schedule for them. Sounds like you 3 are a good match!
Boca acts like nothing happened and is wondering what fun thing she can do next.
Rosco goes flat.
Just remember to keep an eye on those baby socks Adina!! :)
LOL! Linda...it really is a dog's life! I'm hoping to come back as my own dog in my next life but I can't quite figure out how to make that happen!
Sasha (50 lbs) and Oliver (75 lbs) hang for a while after our walks, sometimes the walks give them more energy where I question "should I be walking them longer?" I have a backyard that they run around and play in, then we go for a mile and a half walk. Sasha can do 3 miles without any problem and I can usually get a good 2 miles out of Oliver. When both were babies and still growing my vet told me to work up to the long distances and I also heard not to walk them more than 20 minutes at a time when they are just babies. So for the first year I slowly increased the distance as they grew. Sasha is now 2 1/2 and Oliver is 1 1/2. When I take them to the dog park I usually stay about an hour and a half, Oliver is constantly on the move meeting and greeting every dog and human and Sasha ventures away from me but not that far. Oliver gets much more running around at the dog park than Sasha does because of his personaility -LOL. When we get home from the dog park both are exhausted and happy :) You can look up on line to find out the guildlines on the lenghth of exercise for your age and weight dog, I guess it all depends on how fit your dog is as well.
Barbara I looked up one of those sites that give info on dogs exercise requirements. Of course it mentioned all the variable (age, breed, etc) but it said 30 to 60 minutes a day AND that your dog should be tired when you are done! We added a little distance to the walk today but I didn't see any change in her behavior. Still flat but waiting for some action!
Sounds like Oliver is a social butterfly! LOL!
Wilson loves his long walks, if the weather is nice (which it has been YES) We go for 4 miles, come home he plops down, but as soon as he see's me or my DH relaxing, He grabs his ball for us to throw, he just isn't ready to be totally relaxed yet.
He is 83 pounds, the ball throwing only last 2 minutes not long at all. Wilson love attention during walks and at play time, he just likes for us too no he is just not tired yet !!!
Sue it sounds like it is time for a FIVE mile walk! LOL!
Daisy goes straight to the Master Bedroom closet and falls fast asleep. Her morning walk consists of 2 miles and 20 minutes of chase and play in the backyard. The one thing I can say is even if her walk is just a quick mile due to inclement weather she still goes straight to her closet.
I think they have enough energy to play anytime. I have NEVER seen Daisy end a play session, she can be panting and breathing hard but if we don't stop she doesn't either.
Sounds like Daisy is a girl that likes her routine!! I think the fact that Tara is willing to keep going (like Daisy) has me concerned that she is under-challenged physically. But then aren't we all???LOL!
