How to handle a dog attack?

My mom was out walking her 6 pound Yorkiepoo last night and a loose black lab ran across the street and grabbed the yorkie in his mouth and shook him like a rag doll.  My mom is 72 and is not much of a match for a big dog, but she said the owner ran over, got his dog and left.  She ended up taking the pup to the emergency vet to get treated for multiple puncture wounds and had drain tubes installed.

Having never been in this situation I'm wondering what the proper way to handle this is?  Is the owner of the attacking dog responsible for any vet costs?  Should it be reported to Animal Control?

Diane I was involved in a similar situation with my GR on a leash being attacked by a Rotweiller.  It was absolutely terrifying! It finally ended when I made this hideous shrieking sound which cause the rottie to break off. So there may be something to the idea of carrying a noise maker. And with a noise maker you wouldn't have to worry about aiming it hitting your dog instead of the attacker.

 OMG, he is really torn up! So glad he is doing better though but I'll bet he is in a lot of pain. Thank goodness for pain meds.

OUCH! Poor little dog, he sure didn't deserve that. I feel for your mom too. She was lucky to be unhurt, but the stress on her must have been terrible.

Yes absolutley the owner is responsible for all costs, as well as any future costs to related issues due to the attack. The Animal controll needs to know.  On a side note, wow this kind of stuff p***** me off.  If you have a dog keep it on a leash.  And do not take it to dog parks etc, when they are aggresive.  There is nothing I hate more than some jack ass saying to me" sorry don't worry, he just likes to play ruff".  I call b******* and I do.   I get really mad call me a bitch if you like, but if your dog comes at mine, hair raised really aggresive your not gonna like me at all, or my opinions on your abbilities to be a compatant human being.  Sorry all this just drives me crazy, these sittuations.  There is a huge difference between ruff housing and I want to eat you.

I am so with you Rhonda, Kona got attacked at the park by our house a few weeks ago.  It was a golden retriever and totally out of no where!  Kona was a little bit behind sniffing and when she saw we were ahead of her she bounded our way and this dog came out of no where teeth snapping.  Poor think was just shaking and crying, I couldn't find any punctures while I was checking her out, but at home I found one on her butt.  The thing at the dog parks is that people can give you fake names, and not everyone drives, alot of people walk so it can be hard to get a license plate.  Hard to get info when your baby is screamming and all you want to do is get her away from the situation....

I am so sorry your little Kona girl was attacked. A golden retriever??? what kind of horrible breeding was in his background? This sounds terrifying.

Thanks Bonnie, I told the owner to get his @#$@#% dog of mine and checked her, but you know how furry they are, hard to really part all that hair to check.  He said something stupid like his dog gets overly excited, yea right, I just walked away and left.  I get so angry I see red and I really shouldn't say anything when my blood pressure is about to burst.  If she was really torn you bet your butt I would have stalked him and reported him, but I will be prepared if I ever see him again.  I always worry about the mental scarring too, she is a little thing compared to most...  We did leave the actual park on a good note though, we ran into a gorgeous black goldendoodle puppy and they all greeted with sweet sniffs and wagging butts.  We will be sticking to doodle romps as much as possible.

I am amazed you were able to leave the park on such a positive note. That is wonderful for Kona and for you. I hope you find him but without his dog.
