MEET YANKEE!

A gorgeous and sweet 3 year old chocolate Labradoodle who was picked up as a stray in New York City and ended up at the New York City Animal Care and Control Shelter. When Yankee's owners were finally located and contacted, they told the shelter to "keep him." They also could not provide any veterinary records for Yankee as they had never bothered to neuter him, vaccinate him or take him to a vet for any routine vetting at all since buying him at a pet store at 10 weeks of age.

Through no fault of his own, Yankee ended up being bitten by another dog while at the shelter. This dog also had no vaccine records. Because there was no proof that either dog had any vaccines New York State law demanded that Yankee either be held in rabies quarantine for 6 months or be euthanized!

Fortunately, a wonderful animal advocate and rescuer saw Yankee at the shelter and she immediately reached out to DRC for help. Knowing that New Jersey Rabies Quarantine laws are much more lenient than New York State we made arrangements for Yankee to be released to us and boarded with our wonderful vet Dr. John at Willowbrook Animal Hospital in New Jersey.

Yankee arrived on Friday after being in the shelter for nearly 7 weeks. He was filthy, matted covered in feces and fleas! In spite of all he's been through, Yankee is the biggest, goofiest, happiest, most well-mannered doodle pup in the world!

We were shocked quite frankly that he arrived in the state that he was in as we were promised he would receive all basic veterinary care before leaving ACC including HW testing, treatment for parasites and a DHLPP vaccine shot. He was supposed to have received all of the above before leaving their custody and their facility.

Sadly, Yankee received none of this care while at NYACC and now in addition to his quarantine, he needs to be completely vetted.

Yankee will have to be held in quarantine with our vet for 30 days at a cost of approximately $1200. He is scheduled to be neutered, vaccinated and treated for various parasites and skin and ear infections this week.

Because so many wonderful people came forward on Facebook offering assistance for Yankee's expenses, we have set up a "Chip In" specifically for Yankee to cover the costs of his extended stay and his vet care.

All funds raised will be utilized to cover all of sweet Yankee's expenses including his quarantine boarding, food, neuter, and any and all all veterinary needs.

New photos of Yankee will be updated later this evening.

Thank you all so very much for helping DRC provide Yankee with everything he needs to prepare for his new home, family and wonderful new life!

Okay Jacquie a small donation has been made.

Thank Goodness for the DRC and the wonderful Vet Clinic who has her.

Good Luck Yankee!

Thank you so much Lisa!

What a beautiful dog !!  The former owners need a good thump on the head, they probably just let him loose when they did not want him anymore.  They should be fined or better yet made to pay for the vet expenses as the fine and ban from ever owning any animal again.  My donation is on its way.

Thank you so much Barb!...We agree with you BTW....: )

Unfortunately it's NYC..It's a large territory with a huge populous of people of diverse ethnicity, cultures and incomes who also happen to have conflicting beliefs and values regarding companion animals and their care.

There really is no way for the powers that be to enforce this ....

What's most unfortunate is that NYACC falls under the control of the NYC Department of Health whose only concern is for the public health not the animals in the shelters. So guess who suffers because of this?

The shelter workers are to be pitied. They are primarily volunteers and those that are actually employed are paid minimum wage. The DRC philosophy is to treat shelter personnel with respect, kindness and compassion no matter how awful they seem to be for they are the people who are truly in the trenches of animal welfare. More often than not shelter personnel are under-paid, under-appreciated, and end up being harassed and abused themselves on a daily basis by the general public, and/or the typical crazies that always end up gravitating to animal welfare.

It's a thankless job.......

Just made a donation.  Makes me so angry what the prior owners did and the fact that the NYACC didn't do what they said they would do.

Thank you so much Dori! I cannot begin to tell you how many times a day I find myself becoming so angry and frustrated with humans when it comes to the care and treatment of animals.....You just have to allow yourself a few moments each day to scream in your pillow (lol) and then redirect that anger and frustration towards positive action.

As animal lovers I think we all struggle with these emotions every day.

Awwww....what a beautiful dog! I love how he wants to get to the person holding the camera. Once again, I ask myself, "what is wrong with some people?" I am glad to help. Thank you for helping Yankee.

Thank you so much Laurie....:  ) He is a cutie isn't he?...And he's just the sweetest boy!

My standard line in regards to "some people" is "Sometimes you just have to wonder what went wrong in the womb?"......:  )

I actually just made one last week in memory of Starlit.  I hope that one can help yankee and any other DRC dogs.  Please keep us posted on how he is doing.  GOOD LUCK.

Thank you so much Allyson for your generous donation in memory of Starlit! It is greatly appreciated...:  )

He looks like he is such a sweet good-natured boy.  How could anyone abandon him at the shelter. Glad to help such a sweet boy.  I made a donation to help with his care.

Thank you Julie!.....We agree.....It's unfathomable...In reality he was abandoned to the streets of NY.....Yankee as picked up as a stray in Manhattan......He's lucky he wasn't hit by a car and killed....
