Heartgard = stinky butt?

Since Interceptor is on backorder my vet gave me Heartgard for Haley. Feb. 1 was the first time he got the Heartgard and it's been a long time since I have used it. That night Haley got up in HD's lap in the recliner and turned around which meant his butt was in DH's face. He said "Haley, you stink!" I was immediately asked to check Haley's butt for poo. I got Haley up on the grooming table where I could get a good look. No poo but his butt really did stink and not like poo. I wiped the area off real good but it still stunk. My immediate thought was anal glands so I decided to keep an eye/nose on it. The next day the odor has subsided quite a bit and now there is no odor at all. Could the stinky butt be caused by the Heartgard? Is this what we have to look forward to on the first of every month?

I've been using Heartgard for more than 20 years and never had this problem. If it's the chewable, it may have given Haley a little temporary gas. The Heartgard chewables contain beef flavoring.

It was a chewable and when I opened the container there was a very strong smell.  Would a gas odor stick to the fur for a period of time?  Haley really liked it! (the Heartgard).

There shouldn't be a strong odor, at least I don't notice one. Check the expiration dates on your package. Did you get it through mail order?

Got it at the vet and only for one month (to wait and see what happens with Interceptor).  Did not pay any attention to an expiration date, perhaps I should have.  If we have to do Heartgard again next month I will do a sniff (ugh) test on Haley's butt (and also pay attention to the expiration date).

If you got it at the vet, chances are good the expiration dates are just fine. Maybe the smell is unrelated to the Heartgard and Haley just coincidentally happened to roll around in something "fragrant" outdoors?

HMMMM-never had this issue either-yes they love it, but never stinky.

Every once in a while Oliver will walk past me and he will stink to high Heaven !!!  I immediately know its his anal gland.   Sometimes even when Ollie is laying down on the floor and on his back, twisting and truning he express.  I will wipe his butt and give a little spritz of doggie cologne :)  I have used Heartguard for many years on my past dogs and never had that problem.   I really think its the anal gland your DH smelled !!!
