Chloe is 7 1/2 months and we are having her spayed tomorrow (thurs). We are confident in our vet but it is still scary and very worrysome to think of her having surgery and to be in pain..

Any helpful advice or tips would be appreciated.

Chloe will be fine, just follow your vets instructions.  Sasha was spayed at 6 months and had no problems what so ever.  I picked her up about 7pm that evening, she was groggy but still pulled on the leash - LOL.  We got home, I took her outside "on leash", she did her business, came in and ate a small meal, I gave her the pain & antibiotics and she slept until the next morning.  Sasha was sooooo good with her surgery she did not even have to put the cone on, she never botherd her surgery site, she may have looked at it once but that was it.  As the next day wore on she was back to her normal self by noon.  My vets instructions were ... no running, rough play etc. for 2 weeks, that was the most difficult part to keep a 6 month old puppy calm but I did it.  After about a week and a half, I did let her go off leash to do her business and she was fine.

GOOD LUCK Chloe - you will do just fine :)

My girls were much easier than the boys we have had.  I didn't have to use cones with the girls either.  As Barbara says, the hardest part was keeping them calm after the first 24 hours.  I'm sure all will be fine.  The hardest part will be the part where she is at the vet.  Once she is home, you'll be just fine.

I was so worried to when I had Hunter spayed.  She did very well, I just made sure I gave her the pain medicine on time so it didn't have a chance to wear off.  I know when I have had surgery if you don't take it when you are supposed to it's really hard to get the pain under control again.  I kept a close eye on her and she didn't bother her incision at all so I did not use a cone for her head.  I didn't want her to be anymore uncomfortable than she had to be.  She was great after a couple of days.  I will keep Chloe in my thoughts today :-) Let us know how it goes.

I'm sure she'll be just fine.  The biggest problem we had with Murph was keeping him from playing with his brother those first few days.  Please let us know how she does.

Willow was spayed a lot earlier than that, around 5 months. She was fine, just a little weak, sleepy from medication, and cried just a little here and there when she felt pain. She stopped crying when I lay my hand on her and gently rubbed her back - sooo sweet!  She was back to normal in two days, and it was difficult to keep her from jumping and running. :)

I hope everything goes good today. She will be fine.

All my dogs have been males, so I can't really help you out. Although the younger they are, the better they usually take it! Our Dobie, Piston(RIP, my handsome boy), he didn't get neutered until about 7 yrs. old & he took it real rough at that age. Wheeler got neutered at 6 months & you couldn't even tell, he was as playful as ever, trying to keep him "still" was very hard! Let us know how she's feeling!

Please be sure to update us on how Chloe is doing. I'm positive she will be fine but we still want to hear about her recovery. hugs and doodle kisses for both of you from the three of us.

Alma was spayed around 6 months.  I would use the cone when we weren't around and at night, and a t-shirt during the day.  She was very good about not licking her stitches.  The hardest part as most people have said was keeping her from running around because after a day she was totally back to her old young self.  I even put a board across our stairs so she couldn't climb them and propped up the sofa cushions so she wouldn't jump up.  My vet said no walks for 10-14 days.  That was the hardest.  I did have to take her back in after a few days because fluid was building up under the stitches.  The vet drained it and she healed.  Good luck.  Keep us posted.

I must have a horribly sensitive dog. Mine did not take it well at all. Layed around, would not get up. She was in terrible pain and ended up back at the vet five days later on antibiodics. Even with antibiodics she didn't get up for 10 days. My only suggestion would be if she isn't coming around and you are not seeing improvement after three days to call the vet right away to let them know. It was not a good experience for us, but our experiences with our other female dogs have been great just as the others have stated. And great advice stated above to watch the clock with the pain meds so they don't get peaks n valleys with their pain. It does make it hard to recover.

Thanks so much everyone for your responses.

The vet just called to say her surgery was done and everything went well, and she was waking up..

I can pick her up at 4:30, so am very anxious to get her home where she will be happy.

Yes, I think the hardest part will be keeping her still, and not jumping..she is a jumper. Always on the couch and the bed, and loves to play rough with her big brother..so that will probably be our biggest challenge..hopefully all else will be fine!

I will keep you all posted..thanks again~

Glad all went well.
