OMG.... I know my doodles miss me when I am gone because of the welcome I get when I get home.... but no they do not panic - LOL
Our doodles are fine when we're gone. Probably because they have each other for company plus my DH is retired and home much of the time. However, years ago we had a golden who stayed in our laundry room (which was very large with windows) when we were at work. We came home on day to discover that she had dug a hole in the wall. Not a small hole, we could see a 3 ft section of the studs behind the sheetrock. She was about 2 at the time and no issues before. We started leaving her in the kitchen (which had a sliding glass door) and she was fine after that. It was either a panic attack, she wanted a bigger space (and decided to enlarge the room on her own) or a little of both.
Luna doesn't seem to have much separation anxiety - the only things she's destroyed seem to be out of boredom (small rugs, pieces of paper, shoe insoles).
She gives us a HUGE greeting when we get home though. Her whole back end wags, she howls (ever heard a doodle howl?) and she runs around like crazy.
Just like Luna, Ruby howwwwls. Not when I arrive home, but when I'm fixing her dinner. It's incredibly primal and wolf-like.
Our Lucy can howl with the best of time. Very loud!
My guys have always done fine when they're been alone. I think they pretty much sleep and wait for us to come home. Lately though Murph has been "guarding" the front door. I suspect he is reacting by jumping and barking at the door when people walk by because he's managed to scratch the paint off. Now we put a folding gate across the door whenever we leave, and that seems to have solved the problem.
Fudge and Vern are fine when we leave. We don't even crate them anymore and they wait for us in the foyer on my antique sofa their very large dog bed. I did have a Lab that we rescued and the rescue agency "forgot" to mention that she had severe separation anxiety. We came home to find our custom made, very large front door scratched and clawed to smithereens. We still have not fixed that door and what a job it will be, when we do. We called Honey our million dollar baby :)
Nope, no panicking here. Put a whole lot of sulking!
Cosmo just sleeps on the sofa!
As Sedona got older, we started giving her more and more access to the house when we'd leave. (Knock on wood) we've never come home to any damage. We suspect that she sleeps while we're gone. After he changes, my husband leaves his "at home clothes" on the bed and they're always warm when we return. Sedona must like to be close to daddy while we're away.
I still crate my two for my peace of mine and theirs. If I go out to get the mail or something they are always eagerly waiting and watching for me when I return, just as they do in the car. When I crate them for longer excursions it's always quiet when I return and I often can glimpse them sleeping. I think they know the crates are secure and that I'll be a while. No panics here, though.
I'm never gone long enough for JD to miss me, lol. But when I was working, he was fine alone with the run of the house. No damage or destruction, ever.
I hope Christine (of Christine & Camus) sees this and posts a photo of what her previous adopted doodle Nietzsche did to the blinds when he was left alone. Makes this photo look tame.
