Pregra Turf

We live on Long Island in NY and have a huge yard with lots of  flower beds- I am seriously considering putting in a 15X15 garden solely for our new GD (15wo) She now is training to go in one area and is about 70% there. Our hope would be this artificial turf would be easier to manage and safe for her- she loves to eat grass, dirt, rocks just about anything other than her chew outside toys. I know these products are popular with kennels and pet centers- I am waiting on a rep to come and give an estimate.

If anyone has experience I would love to hear from you.

Oh Adina,  I feel your frustration.   Our back yard looks like "Golfers Gone Wild"....divots everywhere.   This is fairly recent and I think it's due to the fact that we had an early snow melt (hence no protection) and the ground being fairly wet.    I'm hopeful we'll be able to patch and repair.    Banjo goes off into the wooded area on the back side of our yard which is wonderful.....it's the playing and running that's killing the lawn area.

We have a small backyard with some landscaping and a diminishing lawn. Monty learned to do his business on the side of the house where there are rocks, but still the grass has more and more dirt spots. Last year I was looking at this: http://www.k9grass.com/  but I'm not sure if it would be suitable for our yard since it is a bit sloped and has some landscaping done because of the slope. I wish I could just level it all out and put this artificial grass in.

Interesting!! Yes it would be safer if you can afford it. Even without the turf you could fence a small area for her???

Oooo... I will DEFINITELY be following this post!  We live in Smithtown and I have thought about doing the exact same thing for a while!  (My DH thinks I am a bit much - but... he doesn't wash the flors or her muddy paws). We have an area where she goes. but grass won't stay and it's under a bunch of pine trees and gets very muddy in the rain.  And "Miss Priss" doesn't like to walk in the muddy puddles - I'll be watching to see what you find.

I hear you on the floors, ours are mostly hard wood and I'm vacuuming and wet swiffer everyday. Just ordered a rug and boot (paw) scraper rug from plow n hearth, I'm hopeful it may contain the mess. As she gets bigger the paws will certainly carry more stuff. She is getting to like the vacumn and chases it about, everything's a game! :)

During the year we remodeled our house we lived in an apartment which had artificial grass- it was great!  There were lots of dogs there and it was always clean and odor free!  I think it's a great idea.  I don't remember it being especially hot in the summer, but there were shade trees around the grass.

I am now awaiting a sample, I see they carry this brand at Costco and it's the best price I have seen. Our backyard is completely fenced but it's about 3/4 of an acre so uless I hit the lotto we would only devote a portion to Quincys garden, even though I suspect she knows she owns the entire lot! :) first investment is in obedience school, next artificial turf and after that maybe a brother or sister, (keeping that from DH at the moment).

Hmm.. we will have to look next time we are there!  we don't even have a fenced yard.   We too have an acre - too much to fence.  We walk her on her leash to an area right outside our side door, so it would only be like a small area I would put the turf.  I wonder how 'drainable' it would be so it wouldn't hold an odor.  Thanks for the info... and I too have my (secret) sights set on another doodle for a while now... but other 'things' keep coming up (which there probably always will be). LOL

we have a turf area for the dogs and it is about 10 X 12 and is working out great for us.  We have a walk out basement with a doggie door panel in our sliding patio door and they can go out to use the bathroom but are contained to that area and can't get access to the rest of the yard.  Their section is shaded by the house so we could never get grass to come in there anyway.  We tried pea gravel but it was impossible to shovel the snow off in the winter.  The turf was a few hundred bucks, but I am happy that we made that decision.  If you get the turf though, make sure to get a kennel spray to keep it smelling fresh because the turf doesn't "self clean" like natural grass does.

Update: was at Costco this weekend and they are selling a roll of pregra grass 7x15 for 335. We are still seriouly considering it, however another DIY project I don't want. Once we get a prof install estimate I will post. Till then I'm living in muddy paws hell. :)
