Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

My husband and I will be getting a Goldendoodle hopefully this year. Is there any difference in the health of the dog between F1, F1b,F2 and F2B? Also is their temperament any different?

Frankly I think the temperament has a lot to do with how you raise them. My husband and I are never proactive on our own health. We eat organic as much as possible and take very good vitamins. Plus I have my cat on very healthy food and I do give her "cat" vitamins and I plan on doing the same for the dog when we get them.

But still wondering if it really matters what generation we get. They is a breeder I'm looking that has only F1, but some I saw in our area has F1b and some second generations.

Anyways that it for now...

I have a F1 standard goldendoodle puppy. I chose F1 over other generations mostly because of the look, but also because the F1 (50/50) split is consider the stronger of the generations. The more generations and/or mixed the dog is, the higher the risk of gene mutation that could result in health and/or other genetic defects. As I am sure you know, cross breeding to create F1B or F2 is to get more poodle in the mix, strengthening the hypo-allergenic and shedless aspects. I think really it is a personal preference that can depend on what you are looking for when it comes to appearance, possibility of shedding and allergies.

As for temperament, I have never met a goldendoodle who wasn't friendly and loving. The golden makes them people lovers. My pup was called the cruise director of her puppy class. She had to say high to all the people before acknowledging the other dogs in class. Both poodles and golden are extemely smart and easily trainable. So you are correct. How you raise the dog will determine the temperament. But for the most part, the breed in general gives you a head start.

Good luck finding your perfect doodle. You will love being a doodle parent. They are great dogs!

Thanks for the information.... I'm looking at a breeder to does breed F1's.  Never bought from a breeder so learning all the breeding stuff. My family going up always either had strays or pups given to them. We once bought a Chihuahua  purebred.....  Now as an adult looking to get a dog again to add to our family. We also have a cat and bird so very interested in getting a puppy.  I'll do some more research on F1's.

Hi. I own a standard Groodle. - F1b - (Groodle mother and poodle father). I find her extremely low matienance, I comb about once a fortnight and have hair- downe in the comb but no hair on clothing or furniture. Beautiful personality- I did do puppy socialization classes and have taken her to markets etc to be around busy, crowded situations. And now do weekly obedience classes,
I regually exersise,( 3 times a week) we have had a lot of rain where I live and she has had the 'zoomies' as we havent been out as much,
I've witnesses her get down on all 4's to crawl to a toddler so she would be at their height, never shown any aggression.
I have 2 children 14 and 10, and they have friends around, and they can control her.

Health is related to the parent dogs and their health as well as their parents and grandparents and what was passed on.  It doesn't matter what generation they are.

Temperament or personality is more or less inborn, but can behavior can be shaped and managed by training.  Not so much how you 'raise' them but how you train them.  A gregarious, high energy dog isn't going to be made mellow and non-friendly by the way you raise them.  And a very shy and anxious dog isn't going to be made to love everyone and everything by the way it is raised.  But with training, you can control them with commands as needed and help them to accept various parts of life they may not naturally like.

I also have an F1 standard female Goldendoodle. We always Loved goldens, but not ALL the shedding. I loved the look of the f1 and heard so many GREAT things about Goldendoodles in general. Ellie's mom was the Golden and she has a lot of her characteristics. I must also say that I have never met a Goldendoodle that was not the sweetest, most loveable dog. Two of my neighbors got Goldendoodles from our breeder, after falling in love with Ellie!! Good Luck~

I have a F1b goldendoodle and he is fantastic.  A very mellow and loving dog but also enough energy to keep up with our ALD.  His father was a standard phantom poodle and his mother a goldendoodle.  So he is more poodle and has a beautiful coat, does not shed, and needs very little care.  Very important to pick a good breeder.  Look at the history of your puppy's parents and the health from the breeder in general.  My first doodle was from an unreputable breeder and he had liver disease.  The best dog I have ever had, but also the most costly.  It is worth checking everything out well first.

Thanks for the replies.  I'll really check out the breeder.  Will look very hard at them when we are ready to buy.  I had "tons" of animals while growing up. Dogs, Cats, Horses, Ducks, Geese, Guinea Pigs, Birds and probably many more that I can't remember. So I do know personality can be a hit and miss thing. Currently we have a cat that is to die for... She isn't a "normal" cat and also a bird.

I'm on here to learn about the Goldendoodle and all these breeding terms and what to look out for.  Thanks for your experiences with the "types" of breeds.  Never bought from a breeder my self so getting a little education on it. My parents bought from a breeder once, but wasn't paying attention then. ;-) The breeder I'm looking at also has the "median" size Goldendoodles, so the right size for us...
