Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We just booked our vacation in San Diego this June. In fact, I'll be at a conference for 4 days while my DH and Monty are enjoying the beaches and family visits. So my question is for all the beach doodle owners: do I need to get some kind of summer booties for Monty so that his paws don't get burned on the sand?  Any suggestions for nice summer boots?

Thank you, Roberta.

Gavin is at the beach and on rocks most of the summer.  He has gotten cuts and cracks in the past.  I now put a conditioning salve on them called Bab Balm which keeps his pads supple and flexible.

Makes sense. I put Musher's Secret on Monty's paws since they get pretty dry and rough in Colorado as well.

I don't think you will need dog boots in June unless you plan to go hiking where there are rocks that could cut his paws.  The sand has not been a problem for Camus.

There are four dog beaches in the San Diego area, but I do not recommend the one in Ocean Beach.  I love the Del Mar location, however it is closed to dogs between June 15 and Labor Day and Coronado beach is a favorite with many.

Dog Beach - Ocean Beach
(24 hr. off-leash) - located at the west end of Voltaire St.

Fiesta Island - Mission Bay
Located in Mission Bay Park, dogs are allowed in all areas except for the Youth Campground and Least Tern nesting sites (seasonal). Daily 6:00 am - 10:00 pm

North Beach Dog Run - Coronado
(24 hr. off-leash) - located on Ocean Blvd. near Sunset Park at the northern end of the beach next to the U.S. Naval Station entrance. Dogs must be leashed until you reach the beach. Foot shower and free dog litter bags at the entrance to the run.

Del Mar Dog Beach - Del Mar
(post-Labor Day thru June 14 off-leash) - located at Via De La Valle and Highway 101 at the river mouth. Off-leash area is north of 29th St.

Great information. Thank you so much!

Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions.

We just got back from a weekend in San Diego and found Dog Beach in Ocean Beach very nice.

But Helios likes to interact with other dogs and people so maybe that isn't your cup of tea.

Monty is the same way, he likes both people and other dogs. It will be fun!

We were just at Dog Beach in Ocean Beach - well we were at the inlet where there were no waves.   Why do you not recommend it?

Nancy, I don't recommend it because there have been a lot of dog incidents (to be kind).  Years ago I went there often, but the atmosphere changed over time and I stopped going.  I prefer the other beaches.

Thanks.  I guess we were lucky when we went. It was a weekday morning so perhaps that is a better time.  Lots of dogs went by but there were no incidents and our dogs had a wonderful time.  I liked that there were no waves in this area because my Springer is NOT intimidated by waves  (if you get what I am implying about him) and because of his CCL surgeries we can't take the chance of him being pounded in the surf.

Sounds fun!! Lucky Monty!
