It looks like there might be a fox or coyote down in the bottom right corner???
You never know when you are being watched, I can see why you missed it but I'm surprised Monty did. :>)
It's a coyote. Fortunately, Monty was waiting for me on the trail while I was trying to get closer to the dry plants and did not see it either. I guess I need to be more careful.
I thought it was a red fox. Our coyotes are much lighter. Very light tan in color. Still, I used to love this section in the children's magazine Highlights. Find the item in this photo
I would have never seen this unless you pointed it out.
It totally scared me when I was looking at the picture later on. I know there are coyotes in the area, we see a few of them occasionally and I can really hear them at night howling. Monty is usually off leash and I keep my eyes open for any coyotes. As soon as I see one, I put Monty on the leash. But we certainly did not see this one.
What a capture!!
Look at this website.

I still say a fox. Many times you really have to see them run. The tail will stick straight out on a fox when they run.
The snout on this picture looks like a fox. So do the ears. Large and extended. We have both here in our area--the reason we put in a physical fence instead of a electric fence. I see many more fox than I do coyotes.
Now I don't know for sure--again.
Actually, does it matter? You were probably really too close to the den. Glad you are safe.
It does look fox-like to me too.
Have not seen a fox around here. Just a lots of coyotes. Perhaps there is a backyard breeder of coyotes and foxes. :-) In any case, I'm glad Monty did not see it and take off after it.
Hey, that would be "Waldo"!!
