My 14 month old puppy has a habit I have never seen in a dog. She bites her own nails! It really doesn't cause any damage as the nails are too hard but I don't want her to get obsessive about it. I usually walk over to her and give her another chew toy or distract her in some way. Does any one have any insight on this topic?

My Golden would lay on his back and chew his nails, he did it for years, I think he found it soothing. I finally gave up trying to stop him. He never had any issues with infection from his nail biting. I will be interested to see responses about this.

Hi Ann - Thanks for your reply. I like to go to the pages of the people who reply to see pictures, etc. Just want to comment on your excellent choice of Janis Joplin music!! AWESOME doodle music if ever there was!!! ;-)

Thank you!  I agree! : )

We also had a golden retriever that would chew his own nails, it was usually my que that they were getting too long and I needed to trim them. He never hurt himself by chewing on them.
