Amante was chilling at the front screen door this morning. I was doing laundry, cooking, homework etc.

I was walking back and forth accumulating laundry, putting laundry away in other words I was watching him. He was laying on the foyer rug enjoying the cross breeze. I am in the Laundry room doing a switch and hear him parking, not unusual but rare. I stop and call him. I hear a crash and RUN to the foyer. There is a BIG Dog on my Amante. He had crashed thru the screen and into my foyer. I instinctly try to grab the dog by the collar and try yanking him off. The hair on the back of him was standing straight up. I am screaming of course. I result to hitting him with the stick vacuum (closest weapon other then the Swiffer stick). He finally let go of Amante and I yelled for Amante to go in his crate. He did!! (Good Boy) I was able to kick the door shut. Now it is me and this dog who is now pissed because I hit him with the vacuum. He is trying to chew through the crate! I am worried because it is not latched. So I have my vacuum and am warding of this dog. My neighbor who was mowing his lawn finally heard my screaming. He came in I yelled for him to call police he did they arrived to find me standing on the crate with my vacuum now broken, guarding Amante!! I can only imagine what I looked like!! It was not pretty.

Amante miraculously seems fine, clingy and very affectionate. Animal control told me that the dog was chipped so they could find who it belonged to.  He told me hiting him and kneeing him was not the best idea. I won't repeat my answer!!! I can't believe he just crashed through the screen like that!!! I think I am fine but am sure I will be sore later!! I guess I can't have a screen on front door.

Update: I have my glass in now!! Amante still sits in front of door and watches the passerby's. My husband comments that he wouldn't be afraid either if he had a pitbull bodyguard!!  I called about the other dog and was told he was still in custody and that no one has responded to the messages that were left. He was chipped so they have been trying to reach the owners. If no one claims him I guess that means he will be put down. I feel sad for him. I  am very very sore. My neck and shoulders are the worst of it.  Imagine tomorrow will be worse before it gets better.

On a lighter note, JD once walked through the screen on my sliding door. He was in the yard when my DD came home from work, and he went right through the screen to greet her.

Rose Ann, maybe you can get a storm door that has a smaller screen area; I used to have one that had a window panel in the center of the door, and there was a screen that you could put in place of the glass in summer. I've also seen some that are solid at the bottom and the screen or glass part is only at the top.

See my solution below.

Very nice!

Scary stuff.  I have a door with the screen only on the top.  Seems to me it was only $30 or $40 more.

But the good news is that screen doors are much less expensive than vet bills!  Yes, Amante, should be able to sit in his own house without being attacked by another dog.  I'm sure the owner will be very apologetic and will offer to pay for your screen and vacumn.  Amante was great to go to his crate when instructed to do so.

This is the most frightening story I have heard lately. So glad you and Amante are OK. I have a screen door to my screen porch that I use even at night. The air flowing up through the house often cools it off enough so I can use my AC a lot less. BUT since I wanted to be able to use it like that I got a security screen door which has thick metal dividers permanently in place. Then the screen or glass winter panels get fastened over the dividers. A huge dog could nit get through and a dog would have to work at getting through giving me enough time to react I'd hope. I always say only skinny burglars could get through. It does make me feel more secure.

Here is a picture with the glass in place.

Thank You! I have already put the glass in for know!! So much for a cross breeze. My DH is gonna loose it when he gets home!!

that's a great solution F.

You go girl!  Sounds like a momma protecting her cub.  Yeah, like what did animal control think you were going to do say "oh please bad dog, leave us alone"?  It is just amazing what a little adrenaline can do and how quickly we can think on our feet or in this case on our crate.

How scary! I am so glad everyone is ok!!

I cannot believe that happened. What a nightmare! I just don't know how things like this happen. I hope you and Amante feel better soon and that you find out who the owner is and take some sort of action against them.

So scary!  Glad you are both okay.

I'm amazed the animal control person didn't tell you what the correct course of action would be... you would think they would want to help educate you!

The only screen door we have is to the back yard which is fully fenced.  Luna can look out the front door through a window (that has a 1-way reflective coating, so dogs can't see her), but I doubt a dog could break through the glass window or the solid wood door.

Luna was semi attacked (I say semi because the dog was only starting to pin her down and snap at her face)... I instinctually put my body between Luna and the other dog (a BIG American bulldog) and walked forward to get some distance between them.  Probably not the best idea because I likely weighed less than the dog!  It's amazing how "momma bear instinct" takes over in scary situations.
