Ember has started to (I believe) transition her puppy coat into her adult coat. She's 11 months and never used to matt... but now we're in Matt City. The biggest areas that seem to be effected are her back legs and under her ears/lower chin.

I'm consistent in brushing. I use a Les Pooches brush (green, as recommended by Kemp). I also have a comb with rotating tines that I use to check my work. That's all I have. Is there something else I should have to help with matts?

And this probably is a dumb question, but when I read about "pulling the puppy coat out"... does that mean brushing and all the fur that comes out with it? Or something more?

Ember is scheduled for a summer cut in about a month. I am hopeful that having a shorter cut will help with managing the matts.

I don't really have any advice for you--it sounds like you're doing everything you can--but I just wanted to say that Ember is looking gorgeous! Sadie went through a pretty bad matting stage that seems to be behind us (and I'm not nearly as vigilant as you are about brushing and combing). Right now (15 months) she seems to shed a little and matt a little. Guess I'll just have to wait and see if this is permanent or just another stage.

To help get the mats out, there are several products.  I use Cowboy Magic (a Vaseline-like ointment) and Horse Mane 'N Tail spray.  You put one of these products directly on the mat, wait a bit and brush and comb.  They really help.

.Ember is an absolutely gorgeous dog. I love her.
