Who Are You?

Since I have been a member on DK, I have learned so much useful information and a lot about members’ dogs.  I know about the illnesses that afflict some DK doodles.  I know which dogs are picky eaters and which ones have poop issues or behavior problems.  But it dawned on me, that with a few exceptions, I don’t really know much about the humans of DK.    Many of us recently stepped out of our comfort zones to post pictures of ourselves on our profiles, but there is no lasting record of that.  I know that DK members are compassionate people that are truly invested in the lives of their doodles, but what makes you tic?  Who are you when you have to step away from DK and enter the real world (the horror!!)?  So I challenge you to give us a little info about the person behind the dog. 

 

I’ll go first.

 

Name: Amy

Location: Dyer, IN (35 minutes outside of Chicago)

Birth Order: Oldest of 3 kids – the only girl

Family: Husband, no kids

Education: Purdue and DePaul

Occupation: CPA – I work as a tax analyst for a Steel Mill.  I hope to work as a Business Officer for a Public School in the near future; I want to feel like my job actually matters.

Biggest Fear:  I have a phobia of grasshoppers.  Yes, I know they don’t bite or anything but they just really freak me out.  They blend into their surroundings and when you least expect it they jump/fly around…yuck

General: super organized, sometimes impatient, a planner – not a spur of the moment type of person, shy – I much prefer to sit back and take it all in rather than be the center of attention, obsessed with details, cautious (I was going to list the craziest thing I had ever done, but then I couldn’t come up with anything so I had to leave it out!), and incredibly sarcastic – but I swear, I am NOT as boring as I sound!!

If I could have any pet (that isn’t a doodle), I would love to have:  A big fat penguin – one of those cute cartoony looking ones. 

Addiction: A new yogurt place recently opened here (called Red Mango).  You go in and fill up a cup with as much or as little yogurt/soft serve ice cream as you want and then you can top it with all kinds of great toppings (candy, cookies, fruit, choc syrup, etc).  I have become an addict, especially now that it has gotten warm outside.  I go there at least once a week, and I’m sure it will get worse before it gets better.

Guilty Pleasure TV Show: Sister Wives -- I have no idea how I got started watching it, but now I am hooked.

where did you get to ride an elephant?  that looks like it was a blast.  I am jealous.

Is that in Thailand?? I did an elephant jungle trek in Chang Mai and it was amazing!

The top one was in Thailand, at the the Elephant Nature Park, a sanctuary and rescue centre for elephants. You'd be shocked by how poorly elephants are treated in the tourism and logging industries.

The second photo was in Nepal. That elephant was named Poonam. I spent a week in the town and visited her every day and brought her bananas. The man behind me in the photo is her caretaker. He and his family live in a hut and the elephant sleeps outside. His job is to look after her and take her on rides with tourists. He loved her very much and took very good care of her, but it all seemed so unfair. Sort of like a forced labour camp for elephants. I guess I was endorsing it by staying at that guest house that "owns" her, but I didn't know about her until I arrived.

I also visited a breeding program for elephants, where they were trying to replenish the elephant population in the area. I have no idea how ethical the program was, but boy were those babies cute!

Oh what I would give to have my own baby elephant!

Wow! Great pictures! Glad you had a great time in Thailand.

Yes, elephants are pretty amazing. I love their trunks! It's so strong yet so delicate. Can pick up a whole tree as well as a little peanut.

yes, their trunks are so strong. That one in the water would lift me up on her back with her trunk. I kept thinking I was going to hurt her but it was no problem for her. Sometimes she would shake me off and toss me in the water and then laugh her head off. They have a sense of humour too :o)

Awesome that you saw/rode elephants in a real setting.  I wish I were adventurous and visited exotic places.

I LOVE elephants! Did you see the IMAX movie about 10 years ago that followed an elephant family in Africa? There were some incredibly poignant moments in that film. I bawled my way through half of it (much to the delight of everyone seated around me).

Name: Joan (but mostly everyone calls me Joanie)

Family: Married - no children except for our furry babies

Education: Went to Business School and got Certified by Microsoft in Word & Excel, Attended College for three years

Occupation: Currently Unemployed :( But I am an Administrative Assistant

Biggest Fear:  The unknown - I hate not knowing things

General: My husband and my furry babies are my life.  My husband is my rock and he's the only one who can keep me grounded when my world is spinning out of control.  He makes me very happy, I love him so much, and we enjoy the simple things in life.  We have big dreams :)  I love to sing, read, listen to music, do crafts, photography, take random car rides to nowhere and get lost.

If I could have any pet (that isn’t a doodle), I would love to have:  Another dog - I suffer from anxiety and depression and my furry babies are always there for me, can read my moods, and keep me calm.

Location: Bangkok, Thailand

Birth Order: Oldest of 2 girls. Sister 2.5 years younger, but we're often told we look like identical twins
Family: Married, no human kids, just one doodle baby
Education: Kindergarden in Singapore, Primaryschool in Thailand, high school in Australia, college in England (Electrical Engineering), exchange program to the US during b-school
Occupation: Management consultant
Biggest Fear: Home invasion. Coming home and there's someone in the house. In the car and someone's in the back seat. Brrrr!
General: Type A personality. Like to analysing everything. Enjoy maths and science. Love animals, cry easily for sad animal stories (cry EVERYTIME I watch Homeward Bound). Have high tolerance for watching same movies that I like over and over again. (for example, watched Happy Feet 2 three times on flight back from Japan)
