Over the last two weeks, I have pulled the strangest things out of Bayley's mouth. (She's 6 months old). 3 dead birds, 1 dead mouse, and today a baby snake. I can't swear she killed everything...One bird I think commited suicide by a kamikase dive into the window. But the one she ate yesterday, I think she did kill. When I went out to see what she was eating, I saw a panicked young dove that didn't have his flying certification trying to hop/fly over the fence. I think that there is a nest in the spruce tree, and the chicks had fledged and couldn't fly well enough to escape Bayley. I'm fairly certain she killed the garter snake, and she is digging a trench across the back yard trying to catch the mole.
I'm thinking there must be some latent terrier in her ancestry. She has been in the chicken yard when the chickens are out, and she has been respectful, but we have been there to check her. I don't think I would trust her to leave them alone if we weren't there.
Does this seem like odd behavior for a doodle?

Butterflies are definitely on Bayley's list. She just hasn't been quick enough to nab one. I would love to get her on video. Down in the pasture, the butterflies like to congregate on the llama pee spots. There will be 15-20 yellowtails and white cabbage butterflies slurping up the pee. Gross isn't it. They must like the salts in the urine. But Bayley will flush them out and then jump and spin in circles trying to catch one. She is hilarious to watch.
Oh yes, please post a video of this! Sounds so cute!
We have moths in the lawn and when you walk through it they will fly up. Bailey goes nuts trying to catch them! It is fun to watch. She will bury her entire face in the grass and try to eat them.
I don't think so.
Sounds like Jack has another retriever trait: "soft mouth". From Wiki:
A soft mouth refers to the willingness of the dog to carry game in its mouth without biting into it.
JD thanks you for pointing out that his "soft mouth" is a retriever trait and doesn't mean that he's a wuss. LOL
JD a wuss-NEVER!!! Have you ever seen him burn up a courtroom?
LOL, Ricki, in the courtroom, he's a real shark. ;)
Having grown up surrounded by hunters and hunting dogs I can affirm that a dog is not supposed to crush the bird but carry it very gently... not harming a feather in case said hunter wants to have the bird mounted. It was a very different life than I lead now but I continue to have a great affection for all hunting dogs. OMD that's ridiculous. I have great affection for all dogs! silly me.
Funny Bonnie!
Spud is no wuss, just like JD, but I would have to say he would not eat the animal either. He just herds them away.
Humans must be soft mouth. We catch the mouse but no way in hW%^% are we going to bite down on one. Eww
And another reason they like to carry the newspaper, imho.
