We do not have a fenced in yard and are now thinking about putting in a privacy fence. This will be a big investment for us in a house that we don't plan on living in for more than the next 5-10 years. I need the opinion of all you fence lovers. How worth it are fences? Especially in a house that we won't be in forever? Will it add value to our home? We've lived without one (with a doodle) for almost 4 years. Would you or wouldn't you put one in?  I'm thinking of the PVC ones.

I also wondered about the term-privacy?  Chain-link is a piece of cake to install and very inexpensive.  The 6ft wooden was labor intensive. I soaked in a hot bath every night during install.

But, I'm wondering, from your last post about your dogs reactions to walkers and people, if you require privacy because of this?

We have some neighbors that put in the PVC type of privacy fencing, very pretty fencing, but they have an old english sheep dog and he is people reactive and it sounds like he is going to come right through that fence.  He also has an e-fence.  However, people were complaining that he was charging the fence and scaring them so they put up the privacy fence.

Didn't one of your neighbors have a dog that chewed on the PVC?  I think I remember someone telling that story.  OH horrors!

No that wasn't me, but I have a neighbor kid that likes to climb on my aluminum, so if I had PVC I would be in trouble because I don't think it would hold up to that, although I'm not positive.

By privacy I mean like 6 foot wooden of pvc fence so I can't see the neighbors and they can't see me. Remington is doing much better with the barking at people, but how do I say it politely... I really can't stand the kids in our neighborhood who are constantly in our yard or when Remington is out trying to do his business feel the need to walk over and pet him any time they please... I just want to be outside and enjoy my back yard at times which I can't do now without seriously 20+ kids in my yard with me.

If that were the case here that fence would be worth every single penny, moving in 6-10 years or not!

Totally!

My DD got a fence the minute they moved in, well the next Spring, they moved in the fall. The decided on a chain link with black vinyl because they did not want to block out the beauty of the forest behind them. It really is necessary when you have dogs on a main road. They are set back about a 1/4 acre but still, you can never trust a dog not to run. They have a 1 acre lot and the back yard is about 3/4 of an acre, the cost was $7000. Money well spent since they are my grand dogs and I was so worried about them.

It will absolutely add value to your property.

Here is a shot of their fence, (and garden with deer fence around it) I think it is quite nice

Very nice.  And--to add privacy, I was thinking of planting green beans, morning glories, etc along the chain-link.  The fencing can really serve many uses!  Right?    Only mentioned this because I see they garden also. LOVE

It really has come in nicely, this is the beginning in May - my SIL is all about the garden, good for me living in a condo and can't have one.

I have places where morning glory has grown, clematis and honeysuckle also. The Virginia creeper needs to be trimmed back, it loves the deer fence.

This is the type lot that the split rail with the coated wire backing looks nice on as well.  The wooded houses in our neighborhood have them and I like them in that setting.  This looks nice as well.
