I'll have to check out where there was a DK endorsement suggested. Karen's right. DK doesn't endorse any dog food.
Our neighbor has been telling us that Abaday is THE best food out there, and I tried telling him about all the foods that are reccommended and that is not one of them. From everything I looked up about Abaday it doesn't look like a great food, and rates up there with Ol' Roy and those types of brands. Does anyone have any other insight into this food so I can help my neighbor make an informed choice for his puppy?
I don't know that I would compare Abady to Ol' Roy, lol, but it does contain by-products and it's extremely high in saturated fats, with lard being the 4th most abundant ingredient in the formulas I looked at. Extremely high in calories, which reflects the high fat content. Very strange food. I would not recommend it.
Here is what the Dog Food Project says about Lard:
AAFCO: The rendered fat of swine.
Very low in linoleic acid but very attractive to pets, used to make poor quality food more appealing. Few nutritional benefits.
http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=badingredients
Abady also contain some other ingredients from the DFP's list of ingredients to avoid, such as "beef and bone meal" and of course the by-products.
You might also show your neighbor this chart of the worst dog foods on the market, with Abady listed along with Beneful and Ol' Roy: http://www.dogfoodscoop.com/bad-dog-food-list.html
Where did your neighbor get the idea that this was a good food, let alone the "best" food?
Also, their raw formulas are in the "not recommended" group on this list of commercial raw foods:
http://dogaware.com/diet/rawfoods.html
Corn? In any quality dog food, let alone a raw formula? And the ingredients are not human-grade, which is scary, especially for a raw food.
I think Karen's said it all here....You could just print one of those pages from a link above (the Dog Food Project, for example). We would NOT recommend that for sure.
Thanks Karen and Allyson. I don't know where my neighbor found out about this food and why he thinks it's the best food out there. Originally he was feeding his dogs a no name brand from Costco and then he just switched them to Blue Buffalo! So I was like, ok that's great! That's a good food... maybe not the best but one of the better ones. Then today I call him up to tell him that I was going to reorder my dog's food on Wag.com and would he like me to order him a bag of Blue Buffalo with my order and that's when he said that he's switching everyone to Abady because he heard it is THE BEST FOOD OUT THERE, lol. So I started researching this and then looked on the reccommended food list here. I don't know if I'll be able to get through to him, but I will definitely show him this list. I just feel bad for his dogs!
I just wanted to send you guys an update. So my neighbor, even after talking to him, is claiming Abady is THE best food out there. He says it's highly reccommended by TOP VETS and that it is excellent because it has by-products because that is what dogs would eat in the wild. He also went on to inform me that the food I feed (Wellness) is one of THE WORST foods out there because dogs should not have a diet with fiber in it and no by-products. I was just like "alright whatever" and left it at that.
I wonder what your neighbor would say if you told him that there is no nutrition curriculum in veterinary school.
At this point, I would chalk it up to "not your problem" and let him feed his dog whatever he likes.
I agree, Karen. It would be nice if your neighbor's dogs ate better, but it isn't worth bad feelings, especially when he really thinks he is doing the best for them.
