Since the Diamond foods recall we swapped Cocoa out from TOTW Salmon to Earthborn coastal.

Because of all her problems in the past we swapped her very slow almost a whole month.  The end of last week the 1/4 mix ran out and it was time to go full to Earthborn.  Sunday & Monday nights I was up to explosive poops.. all over the cage, her & the walls around the cage  YUCK.

We also had a cook out Saturday night with about 8 kids here and we at first figured someone dropped food in the yard and Cocoa must have found it and we just needed to wait it out.... vet said by wednesday she should be better if that was the case.

Tuesday I gave her the last can of RX food u had left over thinking it might calm her belly (vet said hold food).

Woke up Wednesday morning no poo YAY.  So we went back to Earthborn yesterday.  DH woke up at 1:30 am and from our bedroom upstairs could smell it.  Sure enough it was all over again.

So we are thinking its the food???  What do you all think?

I was trying to avoid TOTW for recalls since her last 2 bags had been recalled. But looks like im going to run out this morning and buy a little bag. I could take her to the vet but all they will do is put her on RX food again and we all know it does fix anything.

Maybe there is a bit to much fish in the new food. We switched to a salmon and sweet potato once and their coats were shiny but omg you could tell that they were going to the bathroom even from the other side of the yard. Now no matter what brand food we always go with lamb base and no deadly poo since.

I think we have to stick with fish though... but never tried lamb and for the explosive poops reason is why (also its expensive to buy food and just toss it out).

When we got her she was on Nutro and had the poops really bad the vet thought it was Giardia so 2 LONG months we treated her for that. I also swapped her over to Blue Buffalo during that time and still nothing changed.

I figured I would try to change the meat and try grain free and we went to TOTW salmon and no more poop issues.

So I dont know what the difference is in the formulas that might be bothering her but I am going to go by a 5 pound bag today and see if that fixes the problem.

hate to see this 28 pound bag of Earthborn not get used ($52.00 down the drain).  I think my neighbor feeds it to her dogs so I might give it to her if the store wont take it back.

Yeah, it could be the food, but not because it has too much fish; it may be because the Earthborn formula is loaded with peas and flaxseed, both of which can be a problem for dogs to digest. It may technically be grain-free, but it's got a whole lot of fillers. It's also very high in certain forms of fatty acids which are not well utilized by dogs.

I don't know which TOTW formula Cocoa was eating, but the Earthborn Coastal formula has way more protein and fat than the TOTW Pacific Stream formula, which is their fish-based food, plus the TOTW doesn't contain three different forms of pea protein or flaxseed.

I really do think you're okay going back to the TOTW formula for now.

Thanks Karen, I knew you would know the difference between the 2.

She was on TOTW puppy pacific stream.

Our closest store only carry's the regular and no puppy (I was told the regular one is an all stages and she is 7mo old now) So I am going to try the regular since I don't want to drag the baby far away in this heat.

Sorry, changed the response because i misunderstood your post.

The regular formula should be fine.

I would love to try something new but these poops and the money wasted trying all this food is no fun.

I will give the regular a go.   Thanks :)

If the diarrhea continues after she's back on the TOTW for a few days, I'd have a fecal done just to make sure it isn't giardia again.

I don't remember if we've talked about Acana as an alternative to TOTW, but if not, that's the one I'd consider if you want to make a change.

Lindsey, you and I chatted about Earthborn before. I switched Apollo around the came time you switch Cocoa. Well, I've had to switch him back to TOTW. He had terrible gas with Earthborn. His poops remained solid, but the gas was constant. It took me a while to realize it was the food, because he was neutered around the same time and had some stomach issues due to the medicine. Well, I switched him back to TOTW two weeks ago and the gas immediately stopped. Oh, and he wasn't on the fish, he had the bison. For now, I'm still researching other options but keeping him on TOTW. Let me know what you decide and good luck! And by the way, the people at the place where I buy Apollo's food brought Earthborn in as an alternative to TOTW during the recall. They intended to keep Earthborn and discontinue carrying TOTW, but many pet owners complained about issues ranging from Apollo's gas to Cocoa's stool issues. They opted to continue w/ TOTW after the recall.

I think it's all those legumes and flaxseed that are causing the GI issues. Jack had problems with the Cal. Nat. Kangaroo & Red lentil formula I tried after the IBD diagnosis, and I'm sure it was the lentils and flaxseed that caused the problem.

Karen,

Funny thing my neighbor has 5 Shiba Inu's and one of them also has IBD and she put him on the Earthborn and he is doing great.  Guess they are just like us certain foods set them off.

I might look to see if our superpetz carried Acana and if they have it in the 5 pound bag to try.  Do I even bother mixing it or just go right to it since she is upset anyway?

For now, I'd go back to the TOTW just to keep the variables limited until the diarrhea is resolved.
