Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I know, I've done all the google searching, and I've looked at photos and I've read all the descriptions, and I've heard the tales of the multitude of changes a doodle's coat can go through, but could someone please offer insight into what's going on with my f3 standard labradoodle's coat?
Her mum and the whole litter. The breeder said that she couldn't be certain the eventual coat, but that since she so closely resembled her mum as a puppy she thought she would look like her.
Wispa as a baby baby puppy:
So she was a very curly puppy from 4-9 weeks, but then as she grew fast, it's like her fur has become thin wisps, and her face and forelegs have become more wavy and fleecy:
And the wispy fur is slowly coming out when I brush her. Not much, but it is, and underneath (at least along her lower back) is coarser, curly, but quite short:
I feel like her fur is so short compared to other doodles her age, and I can't tell what's going on with it. The front makes her look like she's turning fleece; her back makes it look like she's going wool; why does she look like she has two different coat types?
Does anyone have a doodle who went through a similar phase? If so do you have photos or stories of how it turned out?

Hi Emily,
Our pup Murphy is a goldendoodle and she is 1 1/2 years now. She also has different hair growth patterns all over her body. She definitely has a golden retriever face and her hair is wavy and coarser along her back. She's fairly curly around her neck and lower back with silky long hair on her stomach. She has so many cowlicks that it is hard to know what direction to brush her! We lover her look though even though she sheds way more than doodles are supposed to. I think since they are mixed breeds, you just can't be sure how they will turn out. Wispa may be losing puppy fur at this stage. I think their coats keep changing during the first year. I have several pictures posted on my page if you'd like to see how Murphy looks.
I think once her coat is finish changing it looks like it will be pretty close to her moms. its hard to tell from a photo but does wispas coat feel dry at all or is her skin dry. maybe try some detangle coat conditioner in between bathing.
I don't think she has either dry fur or skin, really. She doesn't scratch a lot, which I would associate with dry skin, and there's no flakiness or redness. Would that affect coat?
I know from working in a grooming salon Labradoodles tend to have shorter coats compared to the Goldendoodle. Her coat seems to almost have a coarse texture near the rear, but I think she will end up looking like her mom. She's a beautiful dog! She may shed a little but who knows what will happen when the adult coat comes in.
She is a beauty, isn't she? Sometimes I just look at her and think she must be the prettiest puppy in the world - biased, I know :)
