Just got a twitter notification about salmonella contamination. On mobile now so I don't have the details but figure someone can fill in the info. Sigh.

I never noticed any odor at all, but I don't think I'm as sensitive to those things as a lot of people here are. I'm always surprised by how many people complain about the smell of various foods and things...even their dogs. I guess I've been living with dogs so long I don't notice that, lol.

Also, be careful with Red Barn products. A lot of them come from China. They put their address on the labels and people often take that to mean that's where the products are made, but they're not. It's just a business office. They have a line of higher priced items that are individually wrapped that are made in the USA, but in general, I avoid the brand.

I've never heard of such a thing as glue being used on/in them. It's a bull penis, cleaned out, stretched, dried/smoked and then cut to size. Like any other meat product, it has to be handled and prepared properly. Look at dried dog foods, if not prepared properly they can have salmonella as well.

Suck on a piece of beef jerky for a while and the ends will go white too. I would tend to believe that the white goop is just the dried pizzle rehydrating from your dog's chewing and saliva.

Thank you Karen & Candice...I couldn't find any info on glue either. I tend to be over protective but in any case I don't like bully sticks for various reasons and will try the dried beef tendons and beef tracheas.

TMI Candice. Ha ha

dear Lord Candice.. if I ever need someone to tell me like it is.. you are one of my go to girls.. LOL...  that is an awesome description.

Glad I could be of service! lol :)

Vivian, I read somewhere that they used to be rendered to make glue.  Maybe that's what your vet was referencing.  That "white goop" was just the chewed pizzle, not actual glue.  They're safe, as long as you take the bully stick away when it gets too small.

Thank you Laurie, the vet is not my regular vet she is a homeapathic an ultra expensive and picky, I just had a consultation with her about diet. Mojo is on day 4 after neutering and feisty so going to get him some bully sticks today and monitor him.
