I didn't know! I had no idea how painful Axel's neuter surgery would be ... TO ME.
The members of my household and I are suffering with EBS -- or Elizabethan Backside Syndrome.
You see, Axel follows us everywhere. With gusto. Combine his Elizabethan collar, his happy doodle exuberance, and our slick wooden floors, and we can expect frequent painful cone-butts in our upper thighs and rear end as our 4 1/2-month-old, 55-pound doodle throttles himself after you and can't manage to stop when you do.
Once those rigid cone edges have nailed you a few times, you can't help but get a little jumpy and walk a little faster ahead of him, forgetting that now he thinks you're PLAYING and only hurls himself behind you with more excitement.
EBS has several phases, and I am now at the stage where I instinctively hurry ahead of him -- then remember it will only excite him more -- so I stop suddenly and BANG. My rear is a technicolor production. And I get the brunt of it all day when the kids are at school.
Speaking of productions, I made a little documentary so you can recognize EBS when you see it.

Awwwww poor baby... I hope Axel feels better soon. When my Oliver was neutered I put the collar on him... it lasted all of about 5 minutes, he was banging into EVERYTHING !!!, he just plowed his way thru. He really never bothered his surgery site so I did not have to keep the collar on him thankd God !!! Get well fast Axel you cuttie pie :)
LOL! JD was 14 months old & weighed 68 lbs. when he was neutered, and the shelter sent him home with a BiteNot collar, so I did not suffer from EBS, thankfully.
Axel is one very cute and very huge doodle puppy! I hope he heals quickly & your backside does, too!
They do make them with some padding on the edges. I hate those ones with the sharp edges so for Lucy's recent surgery we got one with the padded edges. We tried the blow up ones as we thought it would be more comfy for her, but it didn't keep her from her stitches so we took it back and got the other one.
This makes me glad Luna didn't need a cone when she came home from being spayed. Thankfully she didn't fuss at her stitches at all, so we just had to try to keep her from playing.
Mojo was neutered 9/24 on Monday & trying to get his stitches so wore the plastic cone and was so unhappy & bumping into things so at a doodlekisses mom's suggestion I made a pair of pants for him from a t-shirt and I bought a blowup collar just to be safe. My vet said to mostly keep him in his create so he doesn't hurt himself as he likes jumping and running all over. He is 6 months old. I hope Axel recovers soon.
I used the blow-up collar for a female foster and it worked beautifully, plus she could eat, drink, and rest comfortably with it on. I figure in a dog's lifetime, you'll have some occasion to use it again, and if not, count your blessings.
It works pretty good for Mojo, he can get near the stitches but hard to really chew and the pants is deterring. When I first blew it up it reminded me of my Mom's hemorrhoid cushion lol...I hope I never need it for that but would make a good airline pillow.
Mojo....I am sorry about the discomfort you are having but you are making me giggle with your outfit. I sure hope my mom doesn't get any ideas.
Your friend Baxter who is being neutered this coming Monday:(
Axel is adorable! When Sadie was in a more puppyish stage, I constantly told her how lucky she was to be so cute! I hope your backside survives Axel's devotion to you/it!
This will be something I have to look forward to on Monday when I pick up Baxter from being neutered.
Muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah - Hilarious!
