Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I am all set to adopt an f2b goldendoodle, however, the breeder just realized that at 7 weeks mine has been shedding a little bit. I was hoping for a shaggy dog. I did not realize that there were smooth coat goldendoodles that did not grow a beard.
Does anyone have any information about whether he will grow a beard?

Yes, but genetics don't work that way. It doesn't matter how many of the ancestors are Poodles versus how many are Goldens, the genes themselves are separate, and are passed by each parent independently of any others. There are three separate genes that control long coats, curly coats, and facial furnishings, respectively. All it takes is one gene for a straight coat, a short coat, or a smooth face from each parent.
We all know someone who looks exactly like his/her mom or dad, with no sign of the other parent. If the genes blended together, everyone would look like a combination of their two parents, and we know that isn't the case. Some look like one or the other parents, and some have characteristics of both. It's a crap shoot.
The only way to be absolutely sure of what kind of coat a puppy will have is to get a purebred.
62.5% is on average, if you were to look at a sample of ALL F2b goldendoodles. It is not 62.5% in every single pup.
What a adorable and handsom boy !! His coat does look like he will be on the more smooth side but you never know. My Sasha (FB1) had a fluffy straight coat when she was a baby and now you woul think she is 110% poodle. Either way you have on cute as heck puppy !!! Enjoy him no matter what !!!
Thank you all for filling me in.
If you really want a goldendoodle that looks a certain way, it may not be too late to back out of this sale. I say this because ALL pups are cute as is this one. But if you are paying for a set of characteristics then it is reasonable to want to receive them. There's probably nothing wrong with this particular pup, but if it is not what you want, better to know that now than after you bring him home and he has bonded to you.
Hard to tell what his coat will be like, they change so much. No matter what his coat looks like, he is an adorable little guy!! Bailey had a lot of whispy hair and only had a few waves on her ears...with no beard.... this was at 11 wks. She is a F1 goldendoodle.
And now...This girl has a beard...and a mustache... LOL. She was groomed about 2 weeks ago so her hair is shorter. When long she has a wavy long coat.
Some of us don't even like beards. There are many discussions on wet, smelly beards. I keep both my labradoodles beards trimmed because I like them better that way : ) The do both have full facial hair though.
