Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

This little 5 month old doodle was adopted by Jacquie's Mom only a couple of weeks ago. He went in for his vaccines and is having a life threatening reaction to the Lepto. He has some time predisposed genetic thing (how scientific of me) to the Lepto. Finn really needs our thoughts and prayers. He has to be one of the 30% that survive this!!!!

Finn's Story

Finn is a 5 month old Australian Labradoodle puppy surrendered to Doodle Rescue Collective in early September.Finn was surrendered to DRC when his original owner was no longer able to care for him due to post traumatic stress. She admitted that Finn had been an "impulse purchase" in the wake of tragedy and later realized she was not emotionally, psychologically or physically prepared to take on a rambunctious doodle puppy with all that she was going through in the aftermath of her devastating loss.

Thankfully, Finn's owner was directed to DRC by our friends Marie Shelto & Bocker the Labradoodle. (Thank you Marie & Bocker!)

Having just lost their beloved pup to cancer 6 months ago, and both being retired and semi-retired, my Mom and Sam had literally just officially signed up to volunteer for DRC. In fact they made a trek to a Rhode Island shelter to pull a doodle on our behalf two weeks earlier.

Jacquie posted last night -

GREAT NEWS! FINN IS IMPROVING AND FEELING MUCH BETTER! -- Finn's red cell count has steadily increased over the last week or so and his energy level has increased dramatically....Mom says he's back to being the playful, energetic puppy he was prior to becoming sick. Finn is still on prednisolone, but the weaning begins next week. His wonderful new vet at the specialists is his champion! She has 2 doodles of her own and has seen this exact scenario with the Lepto vaccine play out many times before ....She is highly optimistic that Finn is going to recover from his ordeal.......Keeping our fingers crossed....: )

I am so sorry to hear this. What a shocking story.

All paws and fingers crossed that Finn pulls through. Hang in there, little boy!

C'mon Finn!  You have to pull through!  We'll be praying for you.

Prayers going out for you little one.

How really terrible, I am hoping with all my heart that this gorgeous Doodle gets better.

Praying this precious Doodle pup has the strength to pull through.  Please keep us posted, Adrianne.

Thank you everyone for your prayers. Finn is in intensive care and is being transfused as I type. He has been diagnosed with Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) that was brought on by his inoculation for Leptospirosis.  His body is attacking his healthy red blood cells rendering them incapable of carrying oxygen to his organs and throughout his body. Vets are saying he has a 1 in 3 chance of surviving the night. To say that my mom is devastated is an understatement. She just lost her beloved 7 year old Boston Terrier to an aggressive form of stomach and bowel cancer only 4 months ago and is now facing a similar situation with Finn whom she has also fallen head over heels in love with and has had for less than a month.

Please tell your Mom that lots of DKers are praying for Finn!! Hope that gives her a little comfort during the night!

Oh Jacquie....I'm so sorry you're all going through this.  He'll make it...he has to.

This is heartbreaking. Praying Finn recovers completely.

Hugs to Mom and prayers for Finn!  Please keep us updated (as I know you will).

Interesting that mostly females between 2-8 years old get this.

A learning experience for all of us. After vaccines if  your doodle is not 'right' take them to the vet. Everyone is sore after vaccines but a real difference in appetite, energy, etc is NOT right.

When a dog develops IMHA, the symptoms can include weakness, lethargy, exercise intolerance, and/or pale mucus membranes. The dog’s urine can turn to a dark orange or brown color. The gums, skin and sclera (the white part of the eye) may turn yellow. Some dogs have difficulty breathing, and some may develop a fever.
