Charlie has a terrible habit, yes, I know, I probably let him develop it.  He loves "digging" on the furniture, especially the microfiber couch. He gets a wild look in his eyes, and I am sure he's having a blast and thinking "ooh, a smooth surface, and it makes a great noise!"

I've tried, and admittedly haven't been very consistent with, "off." Whenever he's on the couch digging, "off" plus treat, then alternative activity. He's currently allowed on the family room furniture, we have no issue with this, but if that's what it takes to stop the digging, fine. The problem is he seems obsessed, and at the next opportunity hops right back up and goes back to digging. It also works to "get in his way" when he gets the Wild Eyed Digger look.

Perhaps there is no easy answer and this is the best solution. Any other things I could try? He of course gets exercise, training in and out of a group class, and other mental stimulation, but I can't stimulate him all the time!

I know that look! With any luck he will find another pass time soon :)

Lachlan does exactly the same thing, Julie, and I have no idea why. He buries his face at the back of the chair/couch and goes nuts digging. I'm not bothered by it but would really like to know why he does it!

Ollie does this too. He gets the look and everything. Ollie has mellowed out with it somewhat.

I'm glad I am not the only one with a Wild Eyed Digger Doodle!

Annie does this too, but most times, if I take apart the couch, it's because she lost one of her toys between the cushions.  I imagine you may have already investigated this option...  Sometimes she digs on my bed right before she lays down, like she's making it comfortable.

Another thought is he might be trying to burn off pent up energy..

Zoe usually does this if there is a toy under something that she can't reach. Today she was doing this in the couch cushion so I reached my hand into the cushions and found a large elk antler! My other dog likes to hide his chew toys.
