Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I am having"fur" problems. Mollye and Maizie are now 6 months old.
Mollye, the one on the left, has more of a lab coat which has more of a wirey
feel to it. I can also tell she has an undercoat. Her fur requires very little
maintanence. Maizie on the other hand, has very soft, fine, almost "hair like"
fur. It looks very full on her head, but very sparse on the rest of her body.
She does not have an under coat and I can see her skin under her hair. She gets
matted very easily and everything sticks to her when she is outside; branches,
leaves, paper etc. Both dogs love water, but I have noticed that since it's
gotten colder, Maizie will not get in anymore, whereas Mollye will swim in any
weather.
I am wondering if Maizie's coat will get thicker over time, how
should I take care of her fur (I am brushing and detangling daily) and should I
put a sweater on her?
I know these are silly, basic questions, but I have
always had labrador retrievers that require very little care.
Any
suggestions on grooming, or favorite products will be welcome.
Thanks,
Kelly

Kelly, we have a very large (1200+ members), very active Grooming Group here on DK where you can help and advice with all of these issues.

Their coats will change at about on year to their adult coats. Expect a little coarser and not so soft when that adult coat comes in. Grooming is needed for the thicker and under coats. The more lab coats will also shed. I have one that everything sticks to also so I brush her more often. :(

Thanks Karen!

Your doods are so beautiful and look so happy!

Cocoa has very fine hair that mats easily. I've learned that it's important to comb systematically down to the skin or you can think the hair is groomed but it's not. I'm sure the Grooming Group has pictures demonstrating this. Your doodles are adorable!
