Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I am confused by the suggested feeding amounts for Fromm. They seem to recommend more than other similar foods and even more than some lower calorie foods.
TOTW Wetlands -- 374 kcal/cup -- 1 3/4 cup for a 30lb dog
Wellness CORE -- 421 kcal/cup -- 1 3/4 cup for a 35lb dog
Fromm Game Bird -- 409 kcal/cup -- 2 1/4 cup for a 30lb dog
Canidae Pure Elements -- 498 kcal/cup -- 1 cup for a 25lb dog
Based on the calories, Fromm's recommended feeding amounts just seem to high. I don't normally feed my dogs the full recommended amount because Ollie usually ends up gaining weight if he gets the full amount. Do those of you that feed Fromms go by the recommended amounts or have you settled on another amount?

Good question, Amy. I'll be interested in the responses, too. I used to feed Fromm but don't remember if I followed the recommended feeding amounts.
I have fed Fromm for the better part of 8 years to Kramer who is 78lbs. He has always gotten 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup in the evening. I never look at what the bags say. Chip who is 53lbs. gets the same amount. They are not over or under weight.
the bag of Fromm says that a 70lb dog should get 4.5 cups per day and that a 50lb dog should get 3.5 cups. Guess I will just feed a similiar amount to the TOTW and see if his weight goes up or down at all and adjust from there. Thanks for the help!
There's going to be a difference in calories depending on which formula you're feeding. It's interesting that we have dogs weighing 78, 53, and 38 lbs all getting the same amount of food per day. I have to believe they are getting different formulas, but maybe not. Sue, which formula(s) are Kramer and Chip getting? Mara, which one(s) is Sadie getting?
It is a wide range. And interestingly, there is not much difference at all in the calorie content of the grain-free formulas versus the ones that contain grains in the Four Star line. 397kcal/cup in the Salmon a la Veg versus 308 & 309 in the grain-free Tunalini and Surf & Turf formulas. Thanks for the info.
I don't feed Fromm's, but Rosco and Boca get fed the same amount of the exact same food and Rosco is 85-90 lbs and Boca is about 60 lbs. Genetic differences in build and calories burned (high energy Boca vs. mellow Rosco) I guess.
Hi Amy, I feed Fromms Surf n' Turf, the recommended for Quincy is 3 1/2-4 1/2 cups for a 50-70lb dog Quincy is 63-65lbs. I give him 3 cups but usually add a little extra protein that I estimate is the equivalent of half cup of food. He usually maintains his wt on that and he gets about an hour or so of exercise a day.He is not underweight and he doesn't get a lot of treats just a few Zukes cookies. So I guess the answer is I feed by the lower end of the recommended amt. If my dog was really active I would probably feed a little more. Occasionally if he's been more active than usual Quincy will look for a night snack and then I give him another half cup.
According to Fromm's guidelines for that formula, a dog Quincy's size should get about 4 ot 4.25 cups a day, so it does sound like you are feeding a little less than that, which makes sense given the info in Amy's OP and what the others here are feeding. It appears that for this brand, the feeding guidelines are overestimated on the packaging.
I feed Fromm and there aren't guidelines for puppies so I emailed the company for feeding amounts for. Mojo...he is is 47 pounds and 8 months old, they got back to me right away and said 3 cups a day.
As he gets older, you may want to revisit that, as they need fewer calroies per lb. of body weight as their growth slows down, and as adults.
