More tainted treat info

I know we've had many, many discussions on tainted treats but I saw this post today on Facebook, from the "Dogs are Family" page and I thought I'd share it.

"This is my friend singing to his dog before he passed away. His dog died from eating tainted Waggin' Train dog treats. He wanted everyone to see this picture and know the story behind it so no one will lose a pet the way he did." The photo is of Joshua Ortiz and his "son", Fizzoli The Stud.

The FDA and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association have issued warnings about treats manufactured in China and now the FDA is investigating irradiation as the cause of the issues. In 2009, the Australian government banned the use of irradiation in pet foods following reports of paralysis and death in cats after eating irradiated cat food. I don't know if any statistics have been done but is there any notable trend in the size of the dogs that are getting sick? Are they mostly smaller dogs or does size matter?

Smaller dogs seem to be at higher risk and more severely affected.

Thanks Karen, I ask because it seems that most of the stories we hear involve smaller dogs.

Isn't that nice of Nestle Purina and Del Monte to finally take their garbage off the shelves? It only took them....well, I guess Allyson could tell us exactly how many years it's been since her Taquito got permanent kidney damage from the Waggin' Train chicken jerky. I know we've been talking about this and warning people in The Food Group for at least three years.  

I'm glad they're finally doing the right thing.I guess they were worried that the lawsuits might eat into their profits if too many more dogs get sick and/or die.
