Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Was watching Dogs 101 on Animal Planet today.  I was completely taken back by a claim made about Goldendoodles by Karen 'Doc' Halligan, DVM.  Her introduction on the Goldendoodles included this comment.  And I quote:  "If you want to have that amazing Golden Retriever personality, but you don't want all that grooming, and all the hair, this is a good dog".   I think it is so irresponsible of a so-called expert to make such a ridiculously false claim.  People actually heed her advice when deciding if a certain dog is good for their family or not.  What a dis-service she is doing not only for potential owners, but for the dogs themselves.   Sorry, Just had to vent my frustration.

You are so right.

I so agree. This is extremely irresponsible on the part of this vet, not to mention unprofessional. I have not seen the show, but I think I will look into this and maybe contact "Doc" karen and see if she would like to donate her services or her money to doodle rescue, since she is helping to keep doodle rescue busy.

You go Karen ... I agree!

I agree, too.
I can't wait for her response.

I doubt I will get a response. She's a "celebrity" vet, lol. Maybe I need to take it public and post something on her FB page, if she has one, or on the program's FB page.

Well Karen, you just let her know you (and JD) are DK celebrity's, with your own area of expertise as well !

Way to go Karen. Keep us informed. If any one can track her down I know you can.

I tried to find her on Facebook already, and was unsuccessful.  Perhaps someone might have more success than I did.

I did however, email her right away.

I just can't believe a professional would make such a blanket statement, especially when it is not true in most cases.

Good for you, Kim. I intend to do likewise.

Here's the link to the segment on Goldendoodles. I agree..irresponsible at best. :( Maybe we DK'ers should contact AP and voice our opinion of her opinion!!!

Thanks, Ricki, for posting the link to the entire segment. I think it's several years old; I  know I have seen it more than once on Dogs 101. I just couldn't remember the specifics.

I am thinking that the issue may be, not necessarily with what the vet said or what she thinks, but in the way her comments were edited. The short snippets she and other interviewees are left saying do come across as "sweeping generalizations," as BruceGirl points out below.

But I really fault the producers of the show, and give the vet the benefit of the doubt. She's identified as working with the Los Angeles SPCA, so surely she's aware of the problem with dogs that don't turned out as promised. At least, I hope she is!
