Hmm is it weird that Ben doesn't like to go on walks and waits until he gets home to run out into the yard and then do his duty (doody LOL)?
Emily, Vern is just like this and here is a discussion I posted about him :) Let me know if you find something that works to speed the process up!
Emily, Thank you! I am telling you my two dogs are the quirkiest dogs I have ever had. I really think Fudge is smarter than me and Vern just dances to a different drummer :) LOL If Jace is like Vern, you have a keeper :)
Emily, I don't know how old your guy is now but when Daisy was young we would say "let's go potty" and we went out the back door and said "go potty" when she did we praised and praised her. Eventually as she got older we started to go to the front yard as well and did the same. After we went potty we turned around and went in every time, even if we intended to go for a walk. The reason we did this is so she new the difference from outside to going potty. We then would stay in for a few short minutes and said "let's go for a walk" or "want to go outside to play" and then what we said we were going to do.
The reason for all of this was our previous dog WOULD NOT GO IN OUR YARD and would not go quickly. We had to walk totally down the street and then he would go - both #1 and #2. We were determined not to do that again.
She now does her business quickly and we don't have to go back inside. She is a dream compared to Zach for sure. Hopefully you little one is young enough to start doing the same.
Oh Laurie, saying that Vern and Fudge are quirky. The poor little dood and doodette. This coming from a woman... their own mother, who has a giant rooster in her yard, and who is always posting her sexy orange bikini pictures on here.
Ha ha ha quirky indeed !!
We went through a thing with Cubbie when he was younger where he would not go when we were trying to leave for work. Our trainer said that he could tell that we were getting ready to leave him for the day (lunches, laptops, purses, keys, etc) so he was taking him time. We started giving him his stuffed Kongs when we left so then he learned that the quicker he pottied, the sooner he got his kong and he suddenly started speeding things up.
Is he on a leash? That would be my suggestion also for getting him to "Get down to business".
When I was training both my doodles I would have them on a leash until they did their business. As they went pee I would say good girl/boy you go pee-pee and when they pooped I did the same "good girl/boy you go poopies". So when I took them out I would always say OK lets go poopies and pee-pees. I must have sounded like a nut but it worked for me.
I still tell mine "good pottie" when they go quickly, but we recently moved into a new neighborhood and the homes are really close together so now i'm worried that my neighbors will hear me and think i'm a nut. Not everyone is as obsessed with their dogs as we are. I think most people just put them in the yard and let them do their thing. lol
Not only are the houses close together in my neighborhood, but I live on a corner, and a lot of people walk by the yard in the morning- high school kids going to school, people just out walking, with or without their own dogs, etc. And they all get a good view of a grey-haired lady with a coat over her bathrobe calling out "Go potty! Good potty!" LOL
that would be a good picture for a slide show!
So is it pottie or potty? I haven't checked spell check.
You usually only use "ie" when it's plural. "Jelly or jellies" "Penny or pennies" "Potty or potties" LOL
