I was talking to my son 14 year old son today. He is registering for high school and wants to take Italian.
I said, "I wonder how you count in Italian. I know how to count in French, Japanese, and Greek but not Italian."
Without missing a beat he replies, "Me neither, but I can count in Roman...i, i-i, i-i-i, i-v, v, v-i...." He totally cracks me up. I don't know where he comes up with this.
How many languages can you count in?

Tell him to take spanish, it's much more useful, he will be able to get real world experience here and it's similar to Spanish.
I took German in high school. :( It was nearly useless in Europe. I worked in Switzerland and if I had taken Spanish I would have been much more independant at work.
He probably won't listen. I told my daughter the same thing, she took French. And she took Italian while I was working in Switzerland. After taking 5 years of German I am having to go and take a Spanish class for work. Hindsight is always 20/20.
Spanish would be a great choice. Unfortunately it's very hard to get into as a freshmen. Also, 2 of his best friends have family in Italy and one family has an apartment over there. They have already suggested how great it would be for the boys to go and stay when they are older.
Languages - I need to learn French, since I plan to retire in France. My son took a couple of years of Spanish in grade school and 4 years of German in High School and does not remember much of what he learned, but it did give a basis for learning French, which he is fluent in. I can only hope that I too can learn French at a rather late stage in life! I think studying any language is a benefit - brain cells are developed in the process, which can only be good.
Wow, retiring in France. I'm envious! I took 4 years in high school and tried to remember it when we went this past summer on vacation.
My son & DIL live in Neuilly sur Seine and work in Paris. I miss them so much, so France it is, but I'm a bit nervous about transporting Camus and learning French.
I love funny kids :) My DD always cracked me up, too. I took two years of German and retained none of it :)
LOL, funny kid.
How many languages I can count in depends on how high I have to count. :-)
Ouch! I failed a cycling class in college because my bike was stolen! The teacher had no sympathy. The F on my transcript was a character building experience for sure. But because I still needed a gym credit before I graduated I ended up taking sailing and loved it.
I can count to 10 in Spanish, French and Romanian.
