The Vet Visit

On Monday Spud had his annual vet visit. 

For one, I did not know, that after three years my vet required a Heart Worm random test.  Done. It was negative.  But a good rule all and all.

The funny thing was the vet enters the door and says, " So, you're here for another ear infection?"

Our history is that about this time of year they start.  Knock on wood, we still have a few months, but I quickly spoke up and said, " No. I've worked really hard NOT TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN. His ears better be just fine.  We are here for his Distemper,Heartworm, and Bordetella.  Please tell me I've done a good job"

He quickly gets out the scope to check on Spud's ears   :(  My heart sank for Spud. 

I told him about Boric Acid and he laughed.  He had never heard of it, or of Thorn It Powder. .  I have hundreds of dollars in my vets  cleaning products and probably all good for the common dog, but any liquid products really made things worse on Spud. I tried. I really did but I only made things so much worse.

Yes, my dog smells funny but he does not smell of ear infections!   I've never seen a vet laugh so hard and he congratulated me on a job well done.   He said, he would have to remember that however I doubt he would recommend the use after just one dog.

Nope, they smell pretty bad, but after four years of ear problems, they can smell like skunk as long as he feels okay

I mentioned that I learned something on my 'website' to Gordie's dermatologist and, while she was polite, she went on a discussion about how bad it is to look things up on the internet ....  She didn't realize that we have secret and special internet gurus to guide us.

Yay for Spud!  May you smell like Boric Acid and Thorn It and not ear infections forever.....

Joanne, it sounds like you have a great handle on Spud's ears but I thought I would share this - it has been a miracle solution for my Gus.

Gus is my 13 year old black lab.  We have been batteling ear infections for 13 years.  AB after AB, steroids, prescription food and thounds of dollars in vet bills with no long term success.  I was desperate to find something that would work so I spent hours on line and came across this Cocker Spaniel web site for home made ear cleaner.  I used it daily for some time then once a week and now maybe once a month.  For the first time in 13 years he has gone months without red, smelly, painful ears.  He shakes is head like a crazy dog rubbing and rolling around when I use it but his ears are infection free! 

I met a cocker breader at the training club I go to and talked with her about this formula, she said every one of her pups go to their new home with a copy of it in their puppy kit.

I just thought I would share - I would have given anything to have known about this 13 years ago and could have spared Gus the pain. He is now virtually deaf but that doesn't stop him from knowing when we open the fridg or a package of cookies.   I have cought my self many times thinking how stupid am I when I shout at him to stop barking, come here, or put that down. :) 

 

Directions for mixing the solution together:

Pour six ounces of isopropyl alcohol in to a plastic applicator bottle.  Add one and a half teaspoons of boric acid powder.  Be careful not to get any boric acid on your skin or clothes.  If you do, wash it off immediately.

Shake the solution extremely well, until the boric acid powder is dissolved, or for five minutes, whichever comes first.

Add two ounces of white vinegar.  Shake the solution some more, until the boric acid powder is dissolved, or for another five minutes, whichever comes first. 

Add one teaspoon of the Betadine antiseptic, and shake it up some more.  Be careful not to get any Betadine on your skin or clothes.  If you do, wash it off immediately.

The ear cleaning solution is now ready to use.



To use the ear cleaning solution:

It is recommended that you use the ear cleaning solution in your garage or outdoors, as the dog will shake it out of his ears and it will fly in to the air and stain things.

Squirt the solution inside your dog's ear until the ear canal is completely full.  Massage the outside of the ear to help slosh the cleaning solution around inside.  Release the dog and let him shake out the ear cleaning solution from his ears. 

If you get any of the ear cleaning solution on your skin, wash it off as soon as possible.

Be sure to shake the solution up really well before each and every time you use it.  The boric acid has a tendency to settle at the bottom of the bottle.  Store at room temperature.

Use the cleaning solution daily until you start to see some improvement.  Gradually cut back to once per week when you are happy with the condition of the ear.  When the ear seems completely free of infection, you can go two weeks between treatments.


Warning:  Do not use this ear cleaning solution on dogs with ruptured ear drums, or on dogs with open sores or wounds in the ear area.  An ear exam by a veterinarian is recommended
prior to beginning treatment with this ear cleaning solution.
