Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
We received a Golden Doodle that was a rehome situation as it was purchased as a hypoallergenic dog which it was not for this family a month ago. She has mouth stains and some stains between her toes and a bit in her privates. I am trying to get rid of it- none around her eyes. I changed her to Earth Born kibble -she came on Purina One. I was using powdered buttermilk that was suggested to me by a friend that breeds westies. She started to smell like sour milk so we stopped. So here I am I need some ideas
My thoughts were:
tylosin power (which I have as I had a dog with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency)
continue the buttermilk 1/2 tsp oer feeding-and deal with the stink
Any other ideas?
Her skin seems to be in good condition. I did have her professionally groomed as she was very long when we got her.
Thank you

My older non-doodle is mostly white and at one time I was dealing with this same problem. I spoke to a professional groomer I know here in town and the only thing she suggested was a product called Angel Eyes. She stated that no matter what you do, the stain has to grow out and be trimmed away (eventually) as nothing can totally remove it. However, she stated that this product would eliminate new stains from appearing.
I have to be honest, I did not purchase the product as I discovered my dog's chewing was from a wheat allergy so we changed his food (mine are on Earthborn products as well) and the saliva stains are now a non-issue as he no longer has itchy skin. My main concern at the time was to figure out and fix what was causing him to chew. He has short hair so I don't have to deal with a stained beard or eyes.
I am NOT a professional, I only sought the advice of a professional and this is the advice I received. I did NOT try the product BUT I know and trust this groomer as I was a vet tech for many years and she was the head groomer of the animal hospital/boarding and grooming facility that I worked at (many years ago.)

Good luck and I hope you are able to stop the licking and chewing first and foremost!
The ingredient in Angel Eyes that helps with the staining is Tylosin anyway.
I don't like the idea of using an anntibiotic just for staining. I have no idea if the products listed on this site are better but:

Glad I never used the product as tylosin is not FDA approved for dogs and cats. http://www.pet-health-centers.com/tylosin-the-dangers-of-using-tylo...
Great site, F, and thanks for the education, it's greatly appreciated.
No, but it's used off-label in dogs to treat certain types of GI diseases. JD is on it for his IBD.
We used it for Sarge for his EPI and in the GI world it is actually the new choice of researchers as Metro (which is commonly used for bad stools) can cause neurological side effects when used long term. Tylan is called Tylosin in the dog world. Tylosin for dogs is by RX and Tylan is non RX labeled for chickens (crazy I know).
I'm very familiar with these drugs, having been part of the dog world for many, many years, lol., and having a dog with IBD who is currently under the care of several veterinary specialists.
Tylan is just the Elanco (Eli Lilly Co) brand name for the generic drug Tylosin. Neither is approved for use in dogs, and neither requires an Rx. I order it from Foster & Smith.

We used Angel Eyes on my sisters Maltese when she was younger. Only the fur around her eyes and beard tho. Not her paws and privates. it worked well but you have to be sure careful to just apply on the fur ONLY.
How long have you had her and how old is she? Does she seem to be licking her paws and private areas a lot? Constant licking with turn cream colored fur a rusty color.
If the dog is not licking or chewing her feet or her privates, and the staining is cosmetic, I wouldn't do anything. Personally, I wouldn't put a dog on antibiotics for cosmetic purposes. Tylosin is a mild antibiotic, but it's still a drug.
However, as Amy says, the reddish-brown color is usually from saliva. It's very common for any dog with a beard to have reddish/brownish stains around the mouth; you just see it more on light colored dogs.
But paw licking can be a symptom of allergies, and neither buttermilk nor Tylan (Tylosin) is going to help with that.
How old is she?
Thank you for the reply. Angel Eyes is a form of an antibiotic-Tylosin or Tylan power, its just a low dose. Hence the reason I was thinking of using the tylan powder I have instead of buying the Angel Eyes product.
We have had her for 5 weeks she is now 14 months old. I did do some trimming to get rid of some redness around her mouth as that is what I heard that it has to grow out it seems to be helping as the face does seem lighter. She does like to lick her face with that long tongue when she gets done drinking-if I could just teach her to use a towel instead!
2 weeks after we got her she went into heat-conveniently (not) the night before she was scheduled to be spayed. She just got over most of the heat cycle late last week. I am sure that was why she was licking her privates so much as she rarely licks there now-that I have seen. She does not chew on her feet or lick her feet that was why I was thinking a yeast thing since the red fur is in the warm spots between her toes. (just little plumes between the toes not the full foot
This is all new for us as we have only had German Shepherds in the past (20 years). I have to say that lack of shedding is a wonderful thing she is very smart and learning new things fast.
I also read that pampers baby wipes seem to help but I am not sure how often you would have to wipe their mouths.
Someplace else I read about giving a tums to change the PH of their system? I am not sure where the best place to start is. The previous owners took her to the vet 2 days before she came to live here so she is UTD on everything so I have not taken her to the vet yet. She was scheduled to be looked at when she went for the spay appt. I am not sure if he would be of help in how to proceed either.
I have seen some very pretty clean faces and I am jealous. Thank you for the help and I hope to be able to get more input.
F included a very good link that tells you which products are safe and all natural vs. which are not so safe. Take a look-see and talk to your vet before making any decisions.
