Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We received a Golden Doodle that was a rehome situation as it was purchased as a hypoallergenic dog which it was not for this family a month ago.  She has mouth stains and some stains between her toes and a bit in her privates.  I am trying to get rid of it- none around her eyes.  I changed her to Earth Born kibble -she came on Purina One.  I was using powdered buttermilk that was suggested to me by a friend that breeds westies.  She started to smell like sour milk so we stopped.  So here I am I need some ideas

My thoughts were:

tylosin power (which I have as I had a dog with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency)

continue the buttermilk 1/2 tsp oer feeding-and deal with the stink

Any other ideas?

Her skin seems to be in good condition.  I did have her professionally groomed as she was very long when we got her.

Thank you

It's very common for dogs to lick their privates when they are in heat, so I think that explains the staining around the privates.

If you're using plastic bowls or water containers, get rid of them and switch to stainless steel or American-made ceramic. That may help with the facial staining.

And if by some chance she has food allergies, the food switch should help with that, since you have eliminated corn and wheat, but it does take 8 to 12 weeks for symptoms to subside if that's the case.

I would leave it alone for now.

Thank you.  We do use stainless bowls as we had an EPI dog so with enzyme treated food we alwasy used stainless to prevent odor build up.

I willj continue to wait and see if it clears up.  I am not as worried about the privates just the muzzle as we will be training her for therapy work and I would rather not take in a dark mouthed dog, lol.

Hopefully the change in food will help.

Thank you

I would think that as long as she is clean, odor free, and neatly trimmed you could do therapy work with her even if that beard staining doesn't clear up.

yes we will still be able to it just does not look as nice :?)

My Buddy get's some dark saliva staining around his mouth.  I use Southpark's Blueberry Facial cleanser when I bathe him and it helps a lot!

I use it only on his head, shampoo twice and leave it nice and sudsy while I soap the rest of him with his regular bath soap.  It really does lighten like it says it will.

He does get some staining around his private area too, but that actually gets shaved away  :)

I will have to check into this as a good shampoo too.  Thank you

Here is a link for an article that explains the staining and lays out a plan to treat it that does not involve the use of tylosin.  I can't tell you if it works because I got too lazy to actually do the plan. :)

Emma's staining is very light and I credit her water drinking bottle/stand for that.  She doesn't get get so wet and messy after a drink, we have hard water, so I fill the bottle with filtered water.

The FB article uses the term "Atopic Dermatitis" incorrectly. A.D. is a genetic immune-mediated disease which involves inhalant allergies and is manageable but not cureable. The only treatment options are immunotherapy shots or immunosuppressant drugs.

The plan for dealing with yeasts itself looks fine, but I just wanted to clarify that.

Thank you.  I am not sure I could keep up with that protocol either-wow.  But it makes sense.  The water stand is really cool.  That is a great thought to keep the chin dry.  I had tried a very shallow gravity water bowl for a bit that I had from some puppies we fostered.  It was great to keep the chin dry but we went back to our larger bowl and stainless bucket because of the water consumption in this house by dogs.  I am going to see if I can find all those items in the link and then see how hard they are to get to actually try it. Thank you!

I have another blueberry facial product that is a different brand.  I"ll have to check when I get home because I think mine might have been a bit cheaper.

Do you give her tap water or filtered water?  We never had a problem with Bender because we always gave him filtered water but he did have tear stains as a puppy.  I never worried about it but it went away by itself.  Not sure why her paws and toes would be brown unless its just her color?  Benders fur on his man part is dark.   I figured with all that urine it's bound to be darker.
