Do you have any info on a new brand Zignature?  Its made in the US, and supposed to be good!

I'm not comfortable with this company yet. So far I've learned that  they import some of their cat food ingredients from China, so I wouldn't be too  terribly surprised if some of the dog food ingredients come from China, too. The  website is full of statements about the food being made in the US, but no  statement that the ingredients are sourced from the US.

The only formula that has an adequate Omega 6:3 ratio is the fish formula.  The turkey formula above has a 7:1 ratio, which is not very good. (You want it  under 5:1, with 2:1 being rare but ideal.) That could be balanced out  with fish oil supplements, though, and it would have to be, because all of the  Omega 3 fatty acids are coming from flaxseed, and dogs don't convert that form  of Omega 3 very well. It's also very very high in legumes, which can be a  problem for some dogs.

Very helpful, thanks!

If the word China is involved, I would steer clear :)

Has there been anymore thought on Premium Edge dog food?  The last chatter I see looks like 2011?  The little shop where I get my dog food only sells three brands TOTW, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul and Premium Edge and he swears by it?  He insists it's top quality and claims one version is "identical ingredients" to Blue Buffalo?  I told him I'd have to check with my expert food guru before switching.  He claims his sister is a pet food nutritionist (primarily cats/dogs).  I like the fact there is more food for about $10 less a bag but on the same note that raised a red flag.  My girls consume well over two bags of TOTW dry food each month and that doesn't include the add ons and supplements!  So anywhere I can save some money without sacraficing the quality would be great.  Thank you.

First, there is no degree program for pet nutitionists, nor any recognized certificate program. The only formal training that would qualify anyone as a "pet nutritionist" would be a veterinary specialist with a post-DVM specialization in nutrition, and there are very few of those around.

"Identical" ingredients to which BB formula? And even if they are identiical, the nutritional composition is not identical. The protein and calorie content in this company's foods is extremely low, and chances are you would have to feed a lot more of it than you do TOTW, so if they are going through more bags of foods faster, there are no savings. Plus, they only have one grain-free formula, and if your girls are eating TOTW, they're eating grain-free.

Premium Edge is owned and manufactured by Diamond, which has had way more than their share of recalls. I also cannot find any sourcing info.

Thanks Karen.  It sounded fishy so I wanted to double check.  I have no idea how you get any sleep with the glow from your halo, you are truely a God send to us folks who are label reading challenged!  Like everyone else I want the best for my girls and I know there are those who prey on us folks who lack the skills and knowledge that you provide us.  I'll continue with TOTW.  Enjoy your weekend.

Any halos around here are badly tarnished, lol. Thank you!

I must say thank you for all of the research and effort made into this forum.  I have been having a puppy feeding challenge.  Bennie had late erupting puppy teeth making dry kibble (Orijen puppy)  nearly impossible for him to eat.  I wet it, mixed it, he only sucked it. Back to the pet store I went.  I got canned puppy food (blue) and mixed it with the other, he ate some of the canned ate some of the dry, and that was it.  Daddy felt sorry for him and gave him chicken (!) Teeth finally mostly in, but back to the pet store as I am convinced he does not like Orijen puppy.  As I stood holding my bag of Fromm Puppy the person who works there came up to me and convinced me that the better choice was Instinct, so I got dry and canned which I mixed.  Bennie ate more than he does of the Orijen, but still not much.  I do not want to continually change his food, his poop is still nice and formed, so he doesn't seem to be having ill effects from the "food finding" so far.  What do you guys think? Oh, he turned 9 weeks today!

@Sundae, it might be a better idea if you started a FG discussion with these questions. There are several different issues here. Just click on Back to the Food Group Discussions up top and start a new one, you can just copy and paste what you've posted here. :-)

ok!
