Hello Everyone,

I just baked a batch of oatmeal raisin cookies. I took a bit of the batter, picked the raisins out, and made one cookie sheet of cookies WITHOUT raisins. They are small, bite sized cookies. I planned to use them as treats for Lucy, my 18 week old mini-doodle.

However, after reading the issues concerning raisins and dogs, I'm wondering if giving her these little cookies would be harmful. Mind you, I REMOVED the raisins before I made this special batch, but the raisins were in the batter in the first place. Do you think raisin "residue" could be harmful?

(I'll upload a picture of these tiny cookies)

Don't feed them :(
But do join the DK COOKBOOK GROUP. We have so many great recipes there so your next batch should be dog friendly and tasty.

I think the sugar would be a bigger issue.  If you've ever tasted a dry dog biscuit (and I have) they are very dry and not sweet.  I agree with Joanne.  Don't feed that to your dog.

I really doubt that would be a problem but she doesn't need the sugar and possibly other ingredients either. I have mad Joanne's recipe for spud's treats and they were great.

I agree with the others. I doubt that the fact that there were raisins in the batter would cause any trouble, but since they do not know what substance in grapes and raisins causes renal failure in dogs, best not to give the cookies at all. And the sugar is not great for dogs, either. There are lots better treats to give a dog, both commercial and homemade.

How do we know if the raisins have or have not contaminated the batter? We don't.
So my motto applies here, " if in doubt, leave it out"
Really why take this risk?

I agree.

What's interesting is that some dogs I know were fed raisins routinely. Not all are susceptible.  Needless to say my dogs have never had one. But just using common sense tells me it's unlikely to be a problem with the batter but for 100 % certainty, no batter=no problem

What I find interesting is that the first reports of raisin and grape toxicity in dogs started around 1989, according to snopes.com. If it were just the raisins causing a problem, you could surmise that something had changed with the processing perhaps. But the composition of grapes hasn't changed...has it?

What if it isn't grapes at all but that something else dogs who happened to have grapes ingested. Also, years ago, you got fruits an vegetables in season. Now they come from all over and year round. Who knows what goes on the the grapes? Whoops just read they ruled out pesticides. Hmmm....

Good points, especially about the produce in the olden days being seasonal and local.

Thanks to everyone for your comments. I guess I'll just have to eat these cookies myself while little Lucy stares up at me and makes me feel guilty.
