My Lucas has not had a mat, does not need brushing but once a week if i feel like it, is groomed once every six weeks. I have never read about a doodle that needs this little amount of grooming. Are there others out there that ( dare I say) have it as easy as me? I kinda feel out of the norm. On the other hand, I don't know what I would do if I had to bathe him, it is always a struggle to brush, cut nails, clean ears, etc. he goes berserk and it is a bad scene cause he is not used to it. Brush time is play/bite time. He is almost 7 mos old.

Thanks all, your responses were eye opening. I guess you just read about doods with mats because its frustrating, you don't hear about doods with "easier" hair cause there is not as much need for support. Now I know that it is "normal" to have a less maintenance pup!

I really only brush Luna (with a Furminator) when she is shedding seasonally (Spring/Fall).  Otherwise she doesn't mat AT ALL.  The only other grooming I do is regular nail trimming and some shaping of her belly, sanitary/bum and tail hair because it gets REALLY long and looks kind of funny with her short body hair.

I use thinning shears for the most part to do the hair trimming and a small pair of curved grooming scissors for smaller areas.

Jack's groomer cuts his nails, and does a scissor trim on his feet, his beard, and around his privates. Otherwise, no cutting at all, and no clippers, ever.

Another advantage of having a shedding doodle who doesn't need haircuts is that a full-grooming of my 82 lb doodle coasts half of what it cost to have my 18 lb miniature poodle groomed, lol.

Haha - yeah.  Luna's best friend is a 20 lb. curly spaniel mix of some sort and it costs something like $60 to get her groomed at Petsmart.  Crazy!

Loo, turned a yr. in Dec and she has a thick curly coat and she does not mat. I comb her once a week and she may have a tangle or two on her rump but very seldom. I took her to the groomer to get her winter coat trimmed and she has never found a mat on Loo, whether her coat is long or short! She says she is the exception not the norm for doodles! I find more mats on my Cavanese than on my doodle! I consider myself very, very lucky that I do NOT have to deal with mats!

I would just make a cautionary point here to any of you reading this that have doodles let say in the (just to be safe) 7 month to 18 months category.  If you are saying they don't mat, please keep an eye on things.  Particularly those of you who don't brush.  We used to say all the time about our girls when they were puppies, I cannot believe they don't mat.  Because of DK I knew to keep an eye on things.  About 10 months I think it was I was rubbing Lucy's tummy and felt it, OMG, a big mat!   So, yes there are those who don't mat too badly, but during this time frame keep a real close eye on it.  Behind the ears, around the collar, in the arm pits, on the tummy.  I'm one of those stupid doodle owners whose dogs never leave the house without being brushed.  I was the same way with my Sister when I would be going to baby sit her kids.  I always told her make sure you send me some nice, cute outfits in case we go some where.  The mats can sneak up on you.  The hardest thing I ever did was not force Sophie through excess baths and haircuts while she was sick.  She was looking pretty scruffy by the end, but I knew she just didn't have the energy.

Good advice about checking the mat prone areas! Every evening when we are cuddling on the couch, I run my fingers thru the dogs coats to check for mats! I am just lucky I hadn't found any or many.
Not to change the subject, but how is Sophie? I had not see any updates?
Thank you for the up date!
Thanks for that, I do make sure I brush Lucas about every other day( now that I trained him that a brush is NOT a Bone, lol). I will make it a point to double check the spots you mentioned, thanks for the helpful tip!
And btw, I read about Sophie today and I cried. I just can't imagine going through that. I know that there will come a time when I will, but gosh, it was too soon for you, I suppose there is never a "good" time. But she sure did look like a happy, healthy dog in your pics, so that is how she shall be remembered. In the fist pic, it struck me that she really looked like she was gazing into heaven and smiling, take another look at it, she looks peaceful and content, knowing hat is where she was going!
