Thanks Karen, I am going to tell our gardner to stop all spraying for weeds in our backyard. He only sprays the flower beds with Round Up, but I am known to have a major "worry gene" and I'm not taking any chances. I will take Barbara B's advice and use Vinegar!
It was good advice. I think I may go around with a bucket of vinegar and a turkey baster this year.
No, Round up is glyphosate. It will kill all growing plants. I used to think it was safer than 2,4D and it probably is in some ways. I believe it does not persist in the soil nearly as long. But read this, doesn't exactly want to make you sprinkle it on your food (the company claimed it was a safer than table salt but we know that's not great for you either)
You may also want to change the title of this discussion to avoid freaking people out, since most people do not read all the responses and may not see my comment that it is weed-killer, not fertilizer, (and certainly not all"grass that is fertilized", lol) that may be cancer causing.
I do not fertilize my back yard where the doodles, I do like to kill the weeds that pop up and I use just plain houshold vinegar in a spray bottle and that works fantastic. I have been using it for a while now and totally satisfied. I buy white vinegar by the gallon :)
I just googled "weeds on grass" and realized I have a lot of them on my lawn. Thought it was just a part of the lawn =/.
why are weeds bad and why do we have to kill them?
Sorry I know I sound really dense asking but I've never had my own lawn before DH and I bought our house
You don't sound dense, you sound interested in educating yourself so kudos, Joanna! Having a yard has its pluses and minuses, this being a minus. My front yard isn't bad but my backyard.....well, if mud were green it would look great!
My dad used to say "if it's green, mow it" and was thrilled when there weren't any bald spots in the yard because the weeds filled them in so I'm probably not the girl to ask. LOL When there are weeds that I can see, I use a good old fashioned weed tool to just get the whole thing up out of the ground, roots and all.
LOL!
I use that tool a lot, so I don't know why my gardener cared to kill them. I'm not very picky about weeds. I like a messy garden, just like I like a messy scruffy doodle.
This makes me think I care more about my pets than my parents cared about their 6 kids. We used to run outside to play in the mist of the crop duster airplanes that dropped poison on the town to kill mosquitos in the 60's. And I was repeatedly hospitalized for chronic pneumonia from second hand smoke of relatives and doctors. Hopefully my puppy survives my oversight on this one application of weed killer.
