Our guy was a rescue. The 'breeder' he was purchased from said he would be around 50. I put breeder in quotes, because it was most likely a puppy mill -- his original owners received him with really bad ear infections + ear hair , and their vet noted him as malnourished. He's 80lbs of drool and love now.
A guesstimate is mostly what we all have - I agree at three months, ten lbs is not going to reach forty lbs.
My pup was 18lbs at 12 weeks and now at seven months still has not hit forty lbs - - she was also estimated at reaching 50+ (my vet guessed much larger) and the rest of her large litter has shown a good variation - but each one is different. I even looked at online charts, plug in age and weight, plus breed - they have a guesstimate and in my case it has been accurate (in spite of my doubt) so my best guess for you is going to be a grand total of a whopping 24lbs maybe.
I didn't get my puppy until he was 14 weeks but he weighed in at 31 pounds when I got him. He just turned a year and now weighs between 75 and 80 pounds.
I got my Tanner at 10 weeks and he weighed about 13lbs. He's now 71 pounds of pure puppy love. :) Tanner stayed small and then one day it seemed like he shot up in size but it wasn't until after 8 months. It sounds like your little guy could end up staying small!
Here is growth chart that I saw referenced a lot on the web.

At 12 weeks, a puppy should be 1/3 of his/her adult weight. My Eva weighed 9.5 lbs at 12 wks and the vet said she was underweight (I could feel each bone in her rib cage and her spine). The vet said she should have been about 11 lbs at 12 weeks and the breeder said she would be ~35 lbs full grown so that's consistent.
I guess you should try to feel his ribs and spine and see if you could tell each bone apart from the other. They say you should only be able to tell the last 3 bones of the rib, towards the stomach.
She was 9.5 lbs couple days ago so not sure how big she'll get:-). She's supposed to be around ~35 lbs fully grown. I like her small as well (so cuddly right now).
Noel was 13 pounds at 3 months. This week she will be 6 months and weighs 45 pounds!
