Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hello everyone!
I have been relentlessly searching the web for days now trying to find an answer to this question so I thought I'd ask it here. I just got my first little goldendoodle, Pettibone, in February and my husband and I absolutely ADORE her! She is so sweet! My family bred labs when I was growing up and I've always had a strong desire to breed them as well perhaps in the future. I'm not doing it for money as much as because I love the dogs and I want to spread the love and help develop the breed. I've read numerous articles on the differences in American and English goldendoodles but I was wondering if anyone had ever bred an American goldendoodle female to an English Cream goldendoodle male and if so, what the results were? I figure that the English line should be kept with English and American with American but I just wondered how the two would mesh. I love the English and American look equally but I just wanted to inquire and see if anyone had any knowledge on breeding the two together? Thanks so much!

Yeah, I've seen in my research the difference in body types and coat color, I just wondered if maybe when the american and English were bred how the results would look...or there was a formal 'name' for them. I've seen a little bit of stuff about the "SugarDoodle" but that just seems like its a doodle bred with an English golden retreiver, not an English and American put together. I'm thinking it would just make a really light colored gold puppy that either looks like a median between the two or some puppies could look stronger one way or the other. This stuff sure is tricky! :)
"Sugardoodle" is a term that was made-up by a breeder for marketing purposes.
I would not do "research" on breeders websites. Much of the information there is often not scientifically accurate, and sometimes, it's simply designed to sell puppies.
Regarding color, remember that there are other breeds involved, namely poodles, which may be carrying for colors other than what you see. Remember, a light colored dog can easily have black puppies, or any other color puppies, depending on what genes they got from their parents. Puppies are not always the same color as either parent. Color genetics are very complicated. You can breed two light colored goldendoodles together and get black or red puppies. It all depends on the genetics of the parents, grandparents, etc.
Yes, genetics are tricky. And for anyone interested in breeding, the most important thing is to have genetic testing done on any dog before you breed him or her. There are lots of genetic diseases that shared by both poodles and GRs of any type. Health is far more important than color or body type.
To reiterate what Karen is saying, the point is that because you're mixing types of retriever, you'll get a litter of different combos. Then when you add the poodle for a doodle...it's all a wash anyway. I guess what we're saying is that it just won't make a huge difference once you get to making the doodle.
