Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

A little disappointed... Only in coat.... attitude and behavior which is more important is awesome!!!

So I wanted a little fur ball too. I'm sure it's too early to tell he's almost 10 weeks old.  I'm attaching pictures.  Not sure what he will turn out to look like.  I just know that he is sweet, smart, and very cute!  My husband didn't want the total doodle doo, I wanted an in-between look.  The breeder assured me he will get his doodle looks eventually, but I am a little doubtful...  But even at 10 weeks he is such a good boy and learns very quickly!

I bet you'll be surprised how much doodley he'll get! There's a good discussion in the group F1 Doodle about coat changes with pictures (I included my pup too). I thought Willow would never fluff out, but her coat was sloooooow to develop. Now she is looking like a little muppet dog. Even getting a beard!!
I too posted about my straight, flat coated puppy, but now she is growing a beautiful shaggy coat. And she is just about 8 months old, I'm excited to see what another 8 months will bring.
Your little guy is adorable, and I love his color! I'm glad you got a nice pup with a good temperment. Congrats!

I'll have to look!  I know they change a lot in the first year!  It will be interesting to see the changes.  He makes my husband and I smile everyday.  He is such a baby and he knows it!  But pretty well behaved so far.  I've had to work on the nipping already but even the vet said he's so much better about that in a weeks time since she saw him at 8 weeks.  He also went from 12 pounds to 14 pounds in that week.  We wanted big and red!  That's what we got.  I already taught him to sit.  He does it regularly with food as a treat.  Started that when he was 9 weeks.  I hope everything else comes to him this quickly!  We are going to go to puppy class this summer too.

you nver know. He looks like he may have an "open" face but he may doodle-up elsewhere. Anyway he sounds like a gem and he is sooo cute.

What does it mean "Open face"?  Just short and no mustache or beard?  I think I heard it before but didn't know what exactly it meant.

This is an "open face" or "throw back" coated Doodle.  There is actually a gene that produces the throw back coat.  All of this guys siblings were very very Doodley.  He is a multigeneration doodle and his mother is my Murphy's sister (she is also very doodley).  I think he is gorgeous!

Yes very beautiful!

The typical doodle facial hair, the beard, mustache, and eyebrows are called "furnishings", and there is a gene that controls that. Poodles have it, but the retrievers don't. Dogs that didn't get that gene have "open faces"

There is actually a test for the genes for furnishings, along with the genes for curly coats and long coats: http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/DogCoatLengthCurlandFurnishings...

Thank you! That is very helpful!

He looks a bit scruffier in the face than Luna was at that age.  She has a completely smooth face and legs, but is sort of wavy everywhere else.  Her coat is short though - it doesn't grow more than 2-3" on her body.  Her tail hair is another story - it grows to full doodle glory and I have to trim it all the time!

Here's a picture of her at 11 weeks.  You can see that she's missing the wispy bits that your pup has on his muzzle.

So cute!

He's really precious, and as the others have said could become more doodley, or not. Ours didn't but we love the way she looks. She's very smooth faced like a retriever but quite curly on her back and chest with a big plume of a tail.

Thank you! We love him so much! The way he looks now I can see him looking a lot like yours. I wanted him for my hubby who wanted an Irish wolfhound or Great Dane. I said No way! So he compromised on the doodle for me. He is so very attached now! He's spent hundreds on toys, treats, food, beds, etc! I even opened the mail today to this sign: ( which I did not buy!). Lol
