Suzanne, You really shouldn't have to doctor up Widbey's food.  He will eat when he gets hungry enough.  One of my dogs is not that interested in dog food except he really loves Orijen.  He prefers to eat when he is more private though so we feed him around a corner and still he waits until the other dogs have eaten and often skips a meal. As long as they are healthy, they don't need to be enticed to eat.  If you do, you might be setting up a picky eater, or a dog who gets fat because they eat more than their body tells them they need.  Would you bribe your kids with Oreo cookies so that they will eat their breakfast  every day?

Nancy, HUH?  Not once did I say I put junk on her food. LOL What I did say is that I wish they made food with gravy added. LOL  I will check out Orijen next time she needs food.  Currently she is on Avoderm because she has been itching a lot lately- despite being on flea treatments.  Vet thought she might have some dryer skin.. thus the avocado oil was something to try.

For dry skin and itching, the very best thing to give is Omega 3 fish oil supplements, either in capsules (buy the human ones) or the pump bottles that you can spray on the food. Another great option that many of us use is to give one 500 mg evening primrose oil capsule (human supplement). Do not puncture the capsules, give them as you would a pill.

Then you probably don't need the Avoderm. It's questionable whether the type of Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids in Avoderm are of any benefit to dogs anyway, since the company doesn't list the specific fatty acids. The ones you want are EPA, DHA, and GLA, none of which are found in avocados.

Karen remind me why the capsules should not be punctured, please. Calla has trained herself to eat them without me having to push them down her throat. I know sometimes they get crunched first. She is very eager to get them down so she can have bits of liver treat and then breakfast : )

Every single thing you read about fatty acid capsules says not to swallow them whole and "do not puncture" them, but I can't find the article i had read about why. I believe it's so that the fatty acids will make it intact to the small intestine to be digested there.

Just checked. Both fatty acid supplements and EPO are sold as liquids. While not proof that they are fine that way it does make me think thy are. Here is just one example:

I couldn't find the products using this link. But I'm betting you have to take a lot more of the liquid form (in terms of volume) to get the amount in a small gelcap. 

This is totally unscientific, but I just feel like if you punctured the gelcaps and then tried to squeeze it onto the food, you would lose a lot. I think Calla's eating it is different in terms of it all getting into her, even if she does puncture it herself in the process.
