Hi All,
Bens been licking his foot so I looked at it to see why and a really thick layer is gone! Obviously it's bothering him and I was wondering what I'm supposed to do. It's Sunday so the vet is closed and thinking if I take him to the ER? My poor baby :(
See picture. Sorry I'm on my phone so I can only do attachment

Okay, then my memory is better than I thought, lol.

That's what we do as well. 2-3 minutes.

A soak in Dreft Soap worked for us. A gallon - sized Baggie, warm water, 20 min soaks

20 Min soaks?  i wonder if he will sit there for that long =/

Make sure the dog does not lick his foot after soaking in salt water.......wouldn't want him to ingest too much salt.,

I remember reading somewhere that soaking their feet after injuries with cold tea bags can be very soothing. Apparently it is something to do with the tannin in the tea.
Milo tore his entire pad one time (Christmas eve) so I got on the Internet and followed the advice. I didn't take him to the ER and they healed quickly. Stupid me - he tore them off running on a tennis court and I never saw the blood until we got home. :-(

Everybody has given you great advice, so I don't have much to add to it. My pup was an indoor dog all winter, and as soon as summer hit and her paw pads finally ran on something other than snow, she scraped them down to where they were bleeding and raw. They do heal, and try to keep the sock on, just make sure you don't bandage too tight, as it's easy to cut off circulation to the dog's foot.

Good luck, dogs are fast healers!

We have this happening all the time with Monty. He scrapes his dew claw pad and the thick layer is gone. I have cut a couple of my husband's socks to slide over just the "wrist". I also have a stash of baby socks from Kmart that I put on him to stop him from licking hist paws if needed. Just clean the area and put a sock on his foot (you might need to gently tape it so that it stays on). It takes only a few days for the pad to grow back, but you need to be on his case if he keeps licking it. If Ben's paws are really dry and cracked, you can use a cream like Tender Foot by NaturVet (I really like this one) to keep the pads moisturized. Colorado is really dry and Monty's pads are cracked almost every month. No need to panic, just cover it for now and it will grow back really fast.

I like Tender F

thanks Jarka.  I really don't understand what couldve happened to his paw.  its only one paw and its not really dry here lately.  It's actually kind of humid which is weird for LA

Soph has the most sensitive paw pads ever and they tear so easily, so unfortunately we have dealt with this often. Just keep it clean and dry. We also use antibacterial spray (you don't want to use ointment- it needs to breathe). Luckily, paw pads heal up amazingly quickly so he should be good to go soon! We do use paw pad wax as a preventative and it does help, but its not perfect.
