Barking in the house....

Any suggestions on barking in the house... Violet sees people, dogs outside and barks loudly..I have tried ..no hush....but she can not hear me because of her loud bark ...Thoughts ?

Lots of info around here on them. I want my dog to bark. One if the reasons I have a chatty poodle- mix. I get horrible headaches from Citronella so I would never use one. But... There are people who live in apartments and may be gone where barking is a severe problem. I'm all for the dog keeping its home. So sure.
I found, and I'm lucky enough to have time, to train, plus I was lucky enough the training worked. For others it has not. So glad mine did because a Citronella collar ( poision to dogs) just is not my first choice. Or my second, or third.
Certainly more humane than de barking :(

My last dog was debarked prior to me adopting him at 7-9 months old.
At 150lbs, he sounded really tiny! Really scared some when they opened the door and met the ' Beast'
On the other side.
To compensate, he learned to talk ;)
He could say such things as: Out, Moma, Love You.
So much for whoever debarked him.

I'm sure they could but they may not have understood the meaning of the language. That takes a mother! Like when Luca tells me his ball is stuck and I need to retrieve it. Totally understandable to me. Different than open my crate I'm hungry or let me in.

The citronella bark collar is humane IMO.  And, I am using it for Camus.  He does not bark excessively when inside and only wears it in the yard where his barking was out of control.  Lately, his barking outside has been much better (when not wearing the collar) so I think he is finally learning it is not necessary to bark at everyone and everything!

No more inhumane than an efence collar imo. If the dog was zapped all day, that would be inhumane. But they learn the rules and keep quiet when it is on and thus have no discomfort.

This is such an interesting discussion.  I never thought about teaching a dog to speak or bark quietly, but, I feel that I may have to with Dougie.  He actually ONLY barks when he is frustrated with something.  I hope that he will learn to bark to alert us to strangers, etc. as he gets older.

I am sure he will! :)   By the way... he is the cutest thing ever!!

Luna is pretty quiet too - she won't bark at the door to be let in or out.  She just waits patiently (and silently).  

She only barks to alert that someone is at the front door or sometimes when she's very excited during play.
