Another Perspective On "Doodle Bashing"- Do You "Bash" Poodles?

On every doodle forum I have seen, there are lengthy discussions about the "anti-doodle" sentiment, hurt feelings about someone's doodle being called a mutt, criticism of designer dogs, etc. I can certainly understand being insulted by this. But stop and think for a moment..have YOU ever made a derogatory statement about poodles?
I lived with purebred poodles for 47 years before I got Jack.
There were outstanding dogs...brilliant, playful, wonderful with children, clean & easy to train. They did not have "attitudes". (Well, except for my show dog.)Yet I continue to hear derogatory remarks made about poodles, a lot of them from doodle owners. Just yesterday, I was speaking to a potential IDOG adopter about her reasons for wanting a doodle. She mentioned the shedding/allergy thing. When I asked her if she had considered a standard poodle, she made that "ech" sound, and then the inevitable "My husband doesn't like "foo foo" dogs." At the vet's office the other day, there was a woman with an F1B that looked exactly like a standard poodle, but with a big plumy tail. We got into a doodle discussion, and she too, was negative about poodles and their 'attitudes'. But her own dog is 75% poodle!
How can you love your doodle but dislike at least half of his parentage? I am sure the breeders and others here who own poodles will agree on what wonderful dogs they are. When I had my miniature, there were actually people who said things like "that's not a real dog", etc. At least half of the doodle owners I have personally met have remarked that they didn't like poodles, and then went on to comment on attitude, hyper, foo-foo, etc. If you were a poodle owner and heard this type of thing from people who then want a dog with half or more of your dog's genetics, wouldn't you be angry too? Might you not become prejudiced against all "poodle mix" dogs & those who breed them?
It is perfectly fine to prefer one type of dog to another, and it is perfectly fine to base those feelings on looks. I myself think doodles are cuter than poodles for one main reason...they have broader snouts and bigger noses, and I love the shaggy dog look, too. I dislike the appearance of pugs, shar-peis, chihuahuas, and many other breeds. But I don't say so to their owners.
Just a little food for thought...have you ever made a disparaging remark about poodles? If we want to help stop the "doodle bashing" that many of us complain about, maybe some of us need to start by adjusting our own attitudes. :-)

I don't feel that it is bashing per say...it is an expression of opinions, as Karen expressed her dislike of pugs! I personally am not a big fan of any small dog, it is not that i don't like them, I just prefer a large dog...and the same with the grooming issues, I prefer to have both Izzy & Tucker quite shaggy...I LOVE the "muttly" look! but this is just all my personal opinion..and I guess everyone is entitled to their own weather i agree with it or not...lol!! ( that was meant to be funny, not snobby! ha ha )

I agree with Karen, in that I don't quite understand the whole mix breeding of the smaller dogs....
...my "opinion" is that this whole "poo mix" and many many other mixes has gotten OUT OF CONTROL!! The whole reason for the GD & LD was for the temperament and non-shedding..in most cases there is no real reason for all these other mixes.. other that to make a buck for the puppy millers and back yard breeders! because these are the people that are thriving from all this mixing!!! They are mixing anything and everything they can...you watch someone will find a way to cross breed a cat and a dog and then there will be breeds like...POO-a-Mese and a Hyma-lya-poo or a Sphinx-a-poo...I could go on...ha ha

i too made fun of a labradoodle when i first heard of them! I thought who in their right mind, would mix a poodle and a Lab??? (now i was picturing a tiny grey poodle like mitsy (described above...my stereotype) with a big black lab (again a stereotype of a lab) i laughed and thought how stupid!!! well, i am now one of those people, not in their right mind that owns not only 1 but i now have 2 and if my husband would allow, i would have a farm full of doodles!!! So maybe education and knowledge is the key here....

and as far as all those doodle bashers out there....they are all just jealous that they don't have one!!! : )

I think poodles are beautiful and intelligent. I always Ooooo and Aaaaaa. Every time I see a standard poodle. I guess people always associate poodles looking like the show-dog shaved poodle cut which I guess people think are "foo foo" looking. I think its kind of funny because I mainly hear stuff like that from men. I "think" poodles were originally bred for hunting water fowl and they are pretty athletic too.

First, to discuss the doodles as mutts issue:
I say go right ahead and call my doodles mutts! They are! And there's nothing wrong with that! My very first dog was a mutt of indeterminable breeds and he was a brilliant, loving, compassionate dog. I will miss him for the rest of my life. I will never be ashamed to call my doodles mixed breeds and no one else should either.
Next, on to the poodle debate:
I was never much into poodles, however, since owning two doodles, I have come to appreciate the breed very much. My sister owns a toy poodle and I love him, too! Before doodles, my family owned a rescued golden retriever and she was a wonderfully gentle and kind-hearted soul. She made me love the breed. Although I don't condone breeding new dogs into a world already filled with dogs being killed due to lack of homes, what a wonderful mix!
