Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hi all,
Our new boy arrived late last night after almost two weeks of trying to get him here to Iowa. He's 8 months old and weighs 75ish pounds (F1 labradoodle I do believe is what he is, have to look at the papers yet).
He loves to jump up on people, I live in town and this is NOT an option, how do I break him of this habit?
I will be getting him into puppy training classes as soon as they start up again in September. He seems to understand the concept of sit but is very stubborn and doesn't want to do what he's told to do. My husband John with Oliver aka Junior.

I agree with other people here. He is in a new environment and if he had no previous training, he just does not know what the rules are. Give him some time to adjust and bond to your family, and start the training as soon as you can. My 14 months old 75 lbs doodle is a jumper as well and even though he learned not to jump on me, everyone else is a different story. Turning back on him does not really work. It also does not help that people in a dog park usually say "oh, it's okay", when I ask them to tell him to sit. It's a work in progress. Your guy is gorgeous. Good luck with him.
Thank you everyone for the encouragment, here's a blog post on what we have done so far today I'm going to don my running shoes here in a minute and take him for a nice long walk. Today is basically crate day for us, it worked with Angel when we brought her home, she was a rescue as well, (12 pound sheltie), his food bowl is in his crate (my fiestaware serving bowl until I can get to the farm store to get him a new bowl) and there's a kong in there with him. He was fussing, I gave him the kong and he's quite happy now, has it between his paws with his face resting on it snoozing.
His crate is in my studio (aka formerly known as the dining room) I spend a lot of time in there drawing, painting, etc., so this allows me to be with him and Angel and not have them feel isolated. Our dining room is also sorta like a hallway in that in order to get to any other room on hte main floor of the house you have to go through the dining room.
More later, gonna go hang with my pooches!
Congratulations! Oliver is adorable! Good for you that you're starting him in training classes. You may want to get a private trainer to start to build a foundation. You'll also find a lot of good information in the training group. He's in a new situation and still very much a puppy. It will take time. Keep working on sit, and progress to sit- stay, and down. Praise and more praise. Use treats, but he only gets the treat when all four legs are on the ground. Ignore him if he jumps. My guy is a therapy dog and he would never jump on anyone when "working" but if he sees someone he loves, he can still get swept away with excitement. We have an F1 Labradoodle who comes to our office and he looks a lot like Oliver. Very strong, energetic and smart. It seemed to take longer for Oscar to "mature" than my ALD but at 3, he is an awesome dog with great manners.
PS Thank you for rescuing Oliver!!
New blog post, he's doing so much better on day three. There's more photos and video there as well.
