All multi-national corporations purchase their ingredients from China through third party food brokers. There is no control of the supply chain, which has led to the deaths and serious permanent illensses of thousands of pets since the massive Chinese melamine contaminations & recalls back in 2007. Del Monte is one of the worst offenders; case in point, the recent very delayed recall of their Milo's Kitchen treats. 

Lots of info on all of this here in TFG. This whole group was started as a result of the 2007 recalls and subsequent issues with the "Big Dog Food" companies, and a some of our members have dogs with permanent kidney damage from these products. Another example: One of the best, highest quality dog food companies of all time, Natura Pet, was sold to Proctor & Gamble a couple of years ago. The sales contract called for no changes to the formulas for one year following the sale. Almost one year to the day exactly, the recalls started. The food is now so plagued by contamination issues that many of the privately-owned boutique style pet supply stores that only sell premium, natural, "made in No. Amercia" food products are no longer carrying the Natura line. Here is the statement made by my local pet boutique on this:

"New foods @ Bentley's. In light of the multiple recalls we are sad to say we will not be bringing back the Natura Line. We will have some new grain free lines coming in to replace it and we are excited that Pure Vita, which is one of them, will honor any Natura Frequent Buyer Cards. No one will lose anything they have built up buying Cal Natural or Evo as we will just transfer that number of bags bought to any of the great Pure Vita flavors. We are looking into a couple others and will keep everyone updated. We do our best to give companies a 2nd chance but when the replacement product of a recall gets recalled it make us nervous. Anyone with any questions or concerns please let us know and we will do everything in our power to help."

There is no reason to suspect that Del Monte will do any better than P & G did; in fact, Del Monte's track record is worse. :(

Thanks Karen for all this wonderful information...it is helpful for us who have puppies.  Our first dog Jack was on a raw diet but I just think I will wait to introduce a raw diet till she is much older.  We are using Orijen Large Breed Puppy at the moment.

You've chosen a great kibble, although unless your pup is expected to go over 90 lbs at maturity, you don't need a "large breed" formula. :)

There looks to be a new food - Made in Canada, called  Boreal.

The packaging reminds me of TOTW. Grain Free, Limited Proteins.

Curious what the thoughts are on it? I got a sample at Global Pet foods today.

In terms of sourcing and ingredients, this food looks fine. But of the three dry dog food formulas, only the salmon has an acceptable Omega 6:3 ratio and Omega 3 content. The lamb and turkey are at 8:1 and 9:1 respectively, which is much too high, and all of the Omega 3 is from plant sources. If you wanted to feed those, it would be important to use fish oil supplements.

Is there an easy way to tell if a food manufacturer is part of one of the bIgger suppliers?

I know Champion is their own company - but wonder if these new companies are able to produce kibble without going under the umbrella of one of the Monster companies.
