FHO Surgery (Femoral Head Ostectomy)

Has anyone's doodle had to have FHO surgery? My Goldendoodle Dazi is almost 7 months old and has been having trouble. I took her to the vet and the Dr did xrays and she has severe hip dyplasia. She is having FHO surgery on the right hip wednesday. The surgeon says this is the best thing for her instead of a full hip replacement. She is in a lot of pain and I hope this is going to help her. She will have the left side done after she has healed up from the right side. I sick with worry and wondering if anyone else has gone through this and how is the recovery for them. I hate this for my baby. I cant stand to see her in pain.

HI, Just wanted to give an update on Dazi. She is getting a little better each day. We walk short walks about 5 or 6 times a day to get her moving and using her leg. She gets tired quick but she loves to take her walks. She absolutely hates the cone she has to wear. I feel so bad for her. She gives me the saddest look. I let her take it off for most of the time while I am right beside her to make sure she doesnt try to get to her staples. She has 21 staples. She goes to the Dr monday to get them out and then no more cone till the next surgery. She stays right with me and wants to be right up against me all the time. I am sleeping downstairs on the floor beside her bed since right now with her leg and her cone its to hard for me to carry her upstairs to the bed. She sleeps right up beside me all night long. She is so sweet. I just hate this for her and any baby who has to go through any kind of hurt.

I am so glad to hear that Dazi is on the mend. You are very dedicated to her and it's obvious you love her a lot. It's tough to see our babies in pain and discomfort but it will be worth it in the long run.  Hang in there, you are doing great.

You might consider buying an inflatable "cone" for the next surgery. It worked very well for one of my fosters when she was spayed, and it's much, much more comfortable for the dog.

I had no idea they made an inflatable cone. I am going to check into that right now and get her one tomorrow. She has to wear it until monday and then I will need it for when they do surgery on her other hip in a few weeks. Thank you so much Karen for telling me about that. Do I need to worry about her popping it if she bites it since its inflatable ?

I don't think so, the material on mine is very sturdy and it would be hard for a dog to bite it when it's on.I think the inner tube itself is made of rubber, not plastic.

I am going to pet smart when soon as they open in the morning and get one of those for her. anything to make her more comfortable.

You may want to try a Comfort Cone.  I've been through all different kinds and found that to be the best.

I'm glad she's feeling a little better. The procedure Halas had a couple of weeks ago was nothing compared to Dazi's surgery, but he has also been very snuggley, always trying to sleep right up next to me.

Just read this post and I am so glad that Dazi is feeling a bit better. I love and admire your dedication to Dazi and her well being. Bless your heart. She will have a normal life thanks to you. Hugs.

Later on down the line with the staples out, you might want to try this method but certainly not now.  Many of us use Onsies or long-legged jammie bottoms in this case, to keep the dog's tongue away.  There are many discussions but look how cute Charlotte looks in  her Onsie after her spay . IIn Dazi's case, a cone is best, but this idea may help in the coming weeks.  Soooo glad you wrote. Thinking of you everyday
