We are on vacation right now and took Seamus to the beach yesterday. He loved running on the sand and getting his paws wet in the clear water.  This morning he had diarrhea and I remember reading on NantucketDogwalk about how some dogs get Beach Diarrhea as a result of salt water ingestion.

I gave him boiled sweet potato and boiled chicken for breakfast.  My question is, should I contact a local vet or wait a while. He doesn't have any other symptoms right now beside the diarrhea. Anyone else have this problem during the summer?  Thanks for any advice! xx

After one episode of diarrhea I would watch and wait. Avoid having him drink salt water. Keep offering him fresh water when at the beach. If he has persistent diarrhea then a vet visit would be warranted.

I agree.

ok that sounds like a good plan. thanks for the advice!!

When I saw the title of this discussion I literally LOL! My doodles usually give me that gift before we leave the beach, try cleaning that up! The next day they may still have the beach poop but it does go away. I make sure they have lots of clean water and give them ice cubes to ensure they are getting lots of hydration.

Like F said, watch and wait. If it continues, then call the vet.

We took the dogs to the beach for 3 days or so once and every morning I'd walk Rosco down to the beach and he'd promptly have diarrhea on the sand (FAR from the water).  Luckily doing so on the sand made it easy to clean up, I'd just scoop a huge amount of sand around it into my bag and voila!  I don't know if this is the same thing your dog is experiencing.  My other 2 dogs had no poop issues, just him.  And all was well in the end.

How is Seamus doing now? I hope it was a one time incident and that he isn't really sick. We live near the ocean and have not had continuing issues with this... just once and then he was fine.

Well day 2, and this morning he ran outside and had sweet potato diarrhea;-(  Poor thing. dh says we should wait a bit because he just finished a round of antibiotics (and almost done with prednisone for a skin infection) but Im leaning toward calling the local vet. Nervous momma here.

The meds may very well have contributed to the diarrhea. It's really important to give probiotics when a dog is on antibiotics, as the antibiotics destroy the good bacteria in the gut along with the bad, and that creates a bacterial imbalance resulting in diarrhea when the meds are finished. Prednisone can also irritate the intestinal lining. I'd give him a couple of tablespoons of plain unflavored fat-free yogurt twice a day for now, and a good probiotic if you can get them.

Right!

yes!! going to local market now for yoghurt. There's cvs/rite aid near by. ANy particular probiotic i should look for?  thanks!

The only human probiotic that I know is okay for dogs is a "medical food" called VSL#3 that has a very, very steep price tag. Otherwise, I usually recommend the ones made specifically for dogs (Proviable, iFlora, Gentle Digest) The human ones may be fine for dogs, but I have no recommendations. :(

ok thanks! wil order iflora.
