Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Several weeks ago Spud had his rabies vaccine and a Bordetella. I know it is common to have a lump at the injection site but we have a huge mass the size of my hand. Alarmingly large. No joke, it must be 5 inches wide, 3 inches high.
You can actually see the swell when he walks toward me. One side is much larger than the other.
It does not seem painful to touch although I have not tried to aggravate it too much. He is eating and drinking and plays.
So I know others have had injection site lumps, how big does this get? Or how big would you allow this to get before wondering if this is normal?
It is not a marble size or an egg. I'm talking sandwich size
Update:
Most probable cause is a post-injection site reaction. Maybe because he was doing a doodle sit pose during the shot and the shot was injected rather low ( almost to the fold of his hip and groin area) For me, this happened rather late if it is a reaction.
He has no fever, eats, plays, but does favor that area and will get up slowly or run funny almost like a hip dysplasia run. Understandable considering. He doesnt lick or bother the area.
Steroids injection given to see if some of this inflammation will go down.
At this time, I am going to stop reading the internet about incidents of Sarcoma post Rabies Vaccinations and go enjoy a day off
Thank you for being out there and listening.

I felt it a few days ago and thought it was a tight muscle. When I came home from work today, it was massive. Of course, I will get him to a vet tomorrow first thing.
Just wondered if the post injection lump common after vaccinations should ever be so large?
Good decision. Read the third paragarph:

I don't know, but think it sounds very big for an injection site and especially one that came from a shot three weeks ago. I am glad he is going to the vet. Keep us posted. Give Spud a hug from us.
That sounds super huge.
I wonder if the liquid / fluid from the injection did not really go in, and stayed right under his skin creating the fluid filled bubble? I hope he is OK....
No, that doesn't reallly make sense since the volume for the injections is not very much at all.
This does sound like something more than the usual bump you would get from an injection. A trip to the vet sounds like a good plan. I am surprised that something that large doesn't seem to be bothering him. Does he have a fever?
Ditto this. I hope it's nothing, but I'm glad the vet's going to look at it.
I'll be anxious to hear what the vet says....good luck.
