keeping out of kitty litter

Molly has an obsession with the cat's litter box. She is not actually interested in poop,but in the clean kitty litter and eating it. Moving the litter box really isn't an option, we had had past issues with the cat and this is the spot she likes and goes in with no accidents. I keep trying to teach a 'leave it' command but not having any luck yet. I end up then moving box and putting back when puppy is napping so cat can use. This isn't the best scenario. Is it too much to think a puppy will leave the box alone and I need to think about relocating it or is it possible for a 10w puppy to grasp concept. Thanks for any ideas.

If you are with the pup during the day try a spray bottle with water and when she gets near it spray her and say leave it otherwise a small gate/playpen around the litter box where kitty can get to it but the pup can't?  We are one step worse they like to poop and my kitty is 19 and no longer uses the box!  It's a race in the morning to see who finds the poop first!  I'm not amused.

I know this isn't funny to you but the mental image of you both running to find the cats poop every morning had me laughing. ;0)

Ü  If it wasn't me in the running I would be laughing too.  The little one is usually the winner with me running in hollaring EWW, DROP IT!  Damn, too late.  Luckily the cat is now taking refuge behind the couch so we've lined it with puppy pee pee pads for easy clean up and there's no access for the dogs (yeah), but still there is usually a pile in the living room somewhere and that nose is on the ground sniffing it out faster than I can get down those stairs.  If my kitty wasn't so darn old, didn't move so slowly (arthritis), and wasn't partially blind, and deaf I'd have a few words with her but she's earned ranking in the household.  I have other images that would have you rolling on the floor with a belly ache, but you'd have to have a warped mind! Ü  And I wonder why I'm still single! lol

The bane of all cat and dog owners! The eating of litter! I feel for you. What has worked for us in the past, is a covered box. We bought a huge plastic utility bin....cut a hole in the front and lid on. also keeps litter from all over the floor. we use automatic Littermaids, so the box had tobe huge. Of course, at 10 weeks, she is probably still small enough to try and fit through the opening, but it may deter her a bit. Thankfully in the house we are in now, the cats can have their own liitle utility room and we put a latch on the door that keeps the door open wide enough for the cats to fit through, but not big enough for 15 week old Enzo th squish thru. Keeps her out of the cat food as well. I will tell you ingesting the cat litter can be very harmful to them. Causes blockage.

Cat litter and the cat food drives my puppy insane - I even tried putting into a gated area outside the kitchen where she can't go and it drove her mad.  I have my cat's stuff in our basement and we put a cat door in the basement door and that worked for us.   Could you try a top entry litter box?  or putting the litter box in some kind of enclosure with a cat door on it?  They also have those booda domes that I would think a puppy couldn't get into?  At 10 weeks my puppy was 22lbs already so I'm not sure how feasible these options are for you.  Good luck. :)

We had the same problem. I put up a baby gate in front of the bathroom door. Our litter box is in my bathroom. The cat can jump over the gate but it keeps out doodle bug out. If I leave it open though, he will go straight for it and he eats the poop! Yuck! No matter how many times I say no! It never helped! So I just put a gate up. That's my lazy way to fix the problem. Lol

I don't know much about cars but can't they jump real high? Could you put sone kind of barricade around it to keep the doodle out but the cat could still get in?

Tossing my hat in the ring for some kind of barricade if possible. I know it's hard when the kitty has a spot she likes and actually uses (from experience, and I did tell the ex not to move the box from here to there but did he listen? Replacing the carpet in the back bedroom turned out to be expensive.) ... Kitty-Roca and those delicious pee-flavored sprinkles are so irresistible to these guys!

In my house I use a baby gate as a barrier (the cat can easily clear it) to the room where the litter box resides, plus the box itself is inside a cabinet (Home Depot special) with a cat-sized hole cut in the side. This at least slows them down when they're in that room, although it's amazing what a small hole a standard-sized doodle can cram his shoulders through when there's kitty munchies on the other side!

While I have been blessed with a dog who really is good when it comes to not getting into things, Kitty Litter was not one of them.

We took a door and cut a hole in the door.  Only the cats can pass through the entrance to get to their box.  The dog does not fit.  we no longer have that problem.  Yum yum, cat turds.

If you want it to look nice, you can purchase a nice little doggie door that is tiny.  A door for a Chihuahua that is not the Labrador size. See, this big guy cant fit.

We didn't care as the door is in the basement.  We just took a jigsaw and cut out the entrance.  It's a simple solution. Problem solved!

LOL...this would never work for us. We have a Munchkin cat....short ,short legs and makes it in, but cannot get out. Our daughter had one, which we tried. Might also add, o,der cats have trouble making the jump out. Hope it works for you.
